The Christian Bible on the Amazon Kindle

I have recently had the opportunity to play with an Amazon Kindle 2 and see what books and resources are available.

You will already no doubt know that the Kindle is great for reading books etc on and is not at all like using a laptop or netbook which somehow if you eyestrain.

I have searched Amazon's online store for available books and there are 28,963 available under the heading of Religion and Spirituality. A further search in this section brought back 6475 titles which include the word Bible in the title. These include all different translations as well as Bible commentaries, Bible in a year, Bible dictionaries, The Message Remix 2 and so on.

One of the first ones to catch my eye was the "King James Bible (with book and chapter navigation Kindle LG)" i.e. this translation of the Bible has been prepared specifically for Kindle users I have downloaded a sample to see what features it has. The price to buy is $7.46 or approximately £4.75. (Not quite sure why everything on the Kindle is priced in dollars even though it is registered in the UK).

There appear to be many advantages of buying a copy of the Bible in this form (I'm afraid we in the West will have a habit of having several copies don't we!) The obvious one being portability then add 1) built-in dictionary, 2)bookmarking facility (which is ideal for daily readings), to this you can add the text to speak facility which will allow you to sit on the beach plugging headphones and listen away, although the "speech" is very much computer generated, monotone and a American accent, so nothing like as good as an audio book.

Also the ability to search this Kindle prepared Bible for any particular word or expression and the index at the front is fully interactive so you can just click on the chapter number and it will take you straight to their and save all the flicking backwards and forwards in Bible study when you're not quite sure where to find this book! I have only used the sample copy and it tells me that the rest of its interactive features are not available so I can only assume therefore that these would further enhance the use of the book.

Whilst I would not recommend that you buy The Kindle just to install a Bible or two on it, it would certainly be one of the first books that I would buy just so that you can easily carry it with you anywhere to the can read it whenever you want and if you're the sort of person that is embarrassed about reading the Bible in public you could happily read it and no one would be any the wiser, and you can always use the search facility is to find that first that has just come to mind and you want to share with someone.

I hope this has been helpful in God bless.
