Review You Are My Sunshine

You Are My Sunshine Best Review

Elizabeth Mitchell is a breath of fresh air in children's music. We saw her perform recently at a children's book festival, and she is wonderful. Her voice and her energy and her love of children are fantastic. She is not a children's artist who seeks to exploit a marketing niche. Rather, she follows in the tradition of Guthrie, Seeger, and others who sing for children because they want to, because they consider children to be important beings.

Elizabeth does some wonderful renditions of music from vintage Sesame Street here (Ladybugs 12) as well as a host of favorites like You Are My Sunshine. This CD ought not to disappoint a toddler or a family who likes to feel joy and to feel relaxed about being together.

Wonderful! We can't wait for her family's new album!

The only drawback--no lyrics included. Ah well. Perhaps on the next one...

You Are My Sunshine Overview

Elizabeth Mitchell is a smidge less locked into the no-frills folkie formula on You Are My Sunshine than on her debut, You Are My Flower. In fact, if you subtract the A-list collaborators (and, OK, the dulcimers, mandolins, and human beat boxes), Mitchell starts to look a lot like the female Dan Zanes. The same rootsy sensibility rules both artists’ recordings, as does a reverence for tried-and-true folk tunes ("Good Night Irene," "Skip to My Lou") and clean production. More significantly, slivers of Zane-like adventurousness shine through here: "Alphabet Dub" set the ABCs to a reggae beat; "Hey Bo Diddley" tips its hat to the rock & roll pioneer; and the kids are called in to spice up "Crawdad." Counting kids' artists who are genuinely cool still requires fewer than 10 fingers, but with Flower and Sunshine, Mitchell proves she's among the elite. --Tammy La Gorce

Beautiful - Amy Guthrey - clarksville, tn
Bought this cd for my 18mth old. I'm trying to get a good kids cd from every genre. This was not just good, it was great. The best in her class of music.

Best Baby CD - Jennifer Snowe - San Francisco CA
I searched high and low for a voice a liked singing popular baby/children's songs... and this is it! Wonderful, soothing voice, but songs vary from peppy to lullaby-ish. Perfect for a little baby.

Wonderful for young and old - Alan Petsche - Castro Valley, CA
On my daily trek to the "MP3 Daily Deal" I noticed that the pick was a children's record and decided to pass. A day later, I thought I would at least preview a track or two (Hey Bo Diddley???). I'm so glad I did, this is a wonderful CD. I can't wait to share with my grandson. It's truly a record that we can both love. THANK YOU for bringing the music of Elizabeth Mitchell to us. I'm now going to check out Ida!!
