The Day The Music Died

No matter what generation you are from, if you're a music lover, you remember certain events: those of the Baby Boomer's generation remember where they were when Elvis died, those of Generation Jones remember where they were when John Lennon was shot, and those of the MTV Generation remember where they were when it came out that Milli Vanilli were fakes. Different generations tend to remember different things. But, there is one event - due partly to Don McLean's tribute song - that transcends eras: if you love music, then you probably know about the day it died.

The Day the Music Died is the term often used to describe a plane crash that took place on February 3, 1959 in Iowa. One of the biggest musical tragedies in history, this crash killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper), and Roger Peterson, the pilot.

The events that led up to the crash were protocol in the music business. Holly, Valens, and Richardson, as well as their respective band members, were on "The Winter Dance Party" tour, a tour that was to stop in 24 Midwest cities in the span of three weeks. When they had an open date, their promoters called The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa and booked a show. The Surf Ballroom, until that spur of the moment decision, was not a scheduled stop.

When Buddy Holly arrived at the ballroom, he suggested that he and his band mates charter a plane to an airport near Moorhead, Minnesota, the destination of their next performance. Holly, and many of the other musicians, were tired of riding in the tour bus. Not only was it crowded and confining, but it also suffered a broken heating system, causing all the band members discomfort and one band member to be taken to the hospital with frostbite.

The musicians found a plane they could charter and a pilot, Roger Peterson. The plane was a Beechcraft Bonanza, a single engine aircraft with three passenger seats. Holly and Waylon Jennings had two of the original seats but The Big Bopper, having grown ill, asked Jennings to give him his seat. Jennings obliged.

Tommy Allsup, Holly's other band mate, procured the third seat but Ritchie Valens, having never flown in a small plane, asked Allsup if he could have it. Allsup agreed to a coin toss, whomever won the coin toss won the seat. Valens proved victorious, at least initially.

Dion DiMucci, the fourth act on the Winter Dance Party tour, was also offered a seat. He, however, refused, stating that the price was too high.

As for the crash itself, no one can say for sure what happened. A little after one in the morning on February 3, the plane left Mason City Municipal Airport. Peterson, at the controls, had planned to file a flight plan once he cleared the tower, but instead, he never called. Before take off was the last anyone ever heard from Peterson or the three musicians on board.

At nine a.m. that morning, Jerry Dwyer, the owner of the plane Peterson was piloting, boarded a plane to search for the missing Beechcraft Bonanza. This came after several unsuccessful attempts by Dwyer to reach Peterson.

After searching by air for only a few minutes, Dwyer spotted the plane's wreckage in a cornfield below. The plane was found at a downward angle, sloped to the right. It was estimated to be traveling 170 miles an hour when it struck the ground, rolled 570 feet, and ended up balled against a wire fence. The pilot died inside while all three musicians were thrown from the aircraft. The medical examiner concluded that all four onboard died instantly from trauma to the head.

As investigators sought to piece together what happened, they concluded poor visibility brought on by bad weather conditions played a huge role in the crash. They also believed Peterson may not have been well versed in using flight instruments and may have been used to relying on his own vision. Investigators also believed he was not given an accurate account of the severity of the weather. Had he known how bad the conditions were, he may have never taken off.

When Buddy Holly's .22 pistol was found in the cornfield a few months later, theories of foul play began to surface. However, no evidence ever supported these theories and the accident was ruled just that: an accident.

More devastating than the loss of musical talent was the loss of youth. At the times of their deaths The Big Bopper was 28, Buddy Holly was 22, Roger Peterson was 21, and Ritchie Valens was 17.

In memory of The Day the Music Died, Ken Paquette, a music lover from Wisconsin, built a monument of stainless steel. The monument contains a steel guitar, and three records. It bears the names of the three musicians who perished as well as the pilot's. It is located near the sight of the crash.

A similar monument was unveiled on July 17, 2003 outside the Riverside Ballroom in Wisconsin. The River Side Ballroom was where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper played on February 1, 1959, roughly thirty hours before the world of music changed forever.

Black Orpheus (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] Overview

Winner of both the Academy Award for best foreign-language film and the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus (Orfeu negro) brings the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to the twentieth-century madness of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. With its eye-popping photography and ravishing, epochal soundtrack, Black Orpheus was a cultural event, kicking off the bossa nova craze that set hi-fis across America spinning.

Black Orpheus (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Marcel Camus's 1959 update of the Greek myth features an all-black cast and a story set in the frenetic energy of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Orpheus, a trolley car conductor and superb samba dancer, is engaged to Mira but in love with Eurydice. For his change of heart, Orpheus and his new doomed lover are pursued by a vengeful Mira and a determined Death through the feverish Carnival night. Camus at once demystifies and remystifies the old story, shifting not only its location but its tone and context, forcing a reevaluation of the legend as a more passionate, pulsing, sensual experience. The film is really one-of-a-kind, an absolute whirl that barely needs words. --Tom Keogh

Review All the Roadrunning

All the Roadrunning Best Review

I listened to this cd in the music store when I was selecting some cds to buy. The sound speakers were positioned along the ceiling, so where I walked the music came with me. Instead of looking for a cd to buy, I was listening to one. Emmylou and Mark are magical togeher. I like the balance of the songs selected, nothing too hard, nothing too soft. They really sound so great together and the production is spot on. I've never really listened to either of them before. If this cd was just on the racks, I would have passed it by. So glad it was playing in the store that day. This cd will grab you, that's the only way I can describe it to you. The harmonies are just beautiful. You just wait in antipiation for the harmonies to kick in on every song. Highly recommended from Down Under x Kangaroos and Koalas x

All the Roadrunning Overview

For several years, the iconic Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris have been quietly recording a remarkable collection of duets whenever the Grammy winning artists could steal away from their own illustrious careers. The extraordinary result is All the Roadrunning. The songs from their Nashville sessions, all originals, while undeniably modern, have the appeal of classics, whether country, Celtic flavored or gently soulful. All the Roadrunning is Knopfler & Harris making music and, as the lyric for "This is Us" puts it, making history.

All the Roadrunning Specifications

Over the last seven years, Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris quietly recorded an album by stealing "a few precious hours of studio time here and there," as the ex-Dire Straits singer/guitarist puts it. Good thing they kept it largely under wraps--expectations would have pushed through the clouds, especially as Knopfler conjured 10 of the 12 cuts, and Harris, who writes potently, but little, contributed two ("Love and Happiness," "Belle Starr"). Yet now that it's here, All the Roadrunning--while beautiful--seems somehow underwhelming, and without a true centerpiece. Anyone familiar with the artists' famous catalogues would expect the repertoire to be poetic and brooding, and that Harris's ethereal soprano would add light to Knopfler's dark Prozac rumblings. But the surprise is that the album is too tame, never breaks out of its midtempo groove, and never takes any big chances.

That said, there is much to like: The marital scrapbook romp of "This Is Us," the bluesy bickering of "Right Now," the wrenching poignancy of the 9/11-inspired ballad "If This Is Goodbye." Knopfler, ever the hypnotic guitarist, turns in some thrillingly droll and laconic vocals, and Harris brings the spirited coltishness of her early work to "Belle Starr." In the end, though, this is not so much a duet album as two famously melancholy musicians singing together--at times, strikingly so. --Alanna Nash

A highly recommended cd - Donna G. Lemieux - RI USA
Emmylou Harris and Mark Knopfler, two great people that sound great together. If you have ever been a fan of either one of these people, this cd will make you a fan of both.

Mark Knopfler wrote most of the songs for this cd. Emmylou wrote two. Every cut is a winner. Mark is up to his usual standards of exelence on both the lyrics and the music. Emmylou Harris's songs are also beyond reproach.

For whatever reason you pick up this cd, it will leave you looking for more by each of these artists. It is a wonderful cd and leaves me hoping that they team up again. All the Roadrunning

When Worlds Collide - M. Marlene Smith - somewhere, Georgia
When two different genres of music collide, the results can go either way. In this case Emmylou Harris, whose sweet comforting voice has long been a favorite of mine and Mark Knopfler, whom I remember fondly from that mostly terrible decade of music, the 1980's, have collided and this wonderful music is the result. Both have soft, soothing voices which harmonize beautifully in this collection of sentimental songs with a few upbeat, catchy tunes thrown in for good measure. My personal favorites are Beachcombing; Love and Happiness; Belle Starr; and, If This Is Goodbye, though there is not a bad song to be found. Very relaxing and even inspirational. I have no idea why the negative reviewers found the whole thing depressing. I'll be first in line when and if these two put together another collection.

Beautiful collaboration! - Gary G. Campbell - Saratoga, CA USA
Each number uniquely shows the talents of Mark and Emmylou. Mark flavors each song with his peerless guitar work and folksy voice, while Emmylou enhances the vocals with her wonderful interpretations. It is interesting to hear both musicians exploring their folk roots, after joining up from such diverse musical polarities.

Review You Are My Sunshine

You Are My Sunshine Best Review

Elizabeth Mitchell is a breath of fresh air in children's music. We saw her perform recently at a children's book festival, and she is wonderful. Her voice and her energy and her love of children are fantastic. She is not a children's artist who seeks to exploit a marketing niche. Rather, she follows in the tradition of Guthrie, Seeger, and others who sing for children because they want to, because they consider children to be important beings.

Elizabeth does some wonderful renditions of music from vintage Sesame Street here (Ladybugs 12) as well as a host of favorites like You Are My Sunshine. This CD ought not to disappoint a toddler or a family who likes to feel joy and to feel relaxed about being together.

Wonderful! We can't wait for her family's new album!

The only drawback--no lyrics included. Ah well. Perhaps on the next one...

You Are My Sunshine Overview

Elizabeth Mitchell is a smidge less locked into the no-frills folkie formula on You Are My Sunshine than on her debut, You Are My Flower. In fact, if you subtract the A-list collaborators (and, OK, the dulcimers, mandolins, and human beat boxes), Mitchell starts to look a lot like the female Dan Zanes. The same rootsy sensibility rules both artists’ recordings, as does a reverence for tried-and-true folk tunes ("Good Night Irene," "Skip to My Lou") and clean production. More significantly, slivers of Zane-like adventurousness shine through here: "Alphabet Dub" set the ABCs to a reggae beat; "Hey Bo Diddley" tips its hat to the rock & roll pioneer; and the kids are called in to spice up "Crawdad." Counting kids' artists who are genuinely cool still requires fewer than 10 fingers, but with Flower and Sunshine, Mitchell proves she's among the elite. --Tammy La Gorce

Beautiful - Amy Guthrey - clarksville, tn
Bought this cd for my 18mth old. I'm trying to get a good kids cd from every genre. This was not just good, it was great. The best in her class of music.

Best Baby CD - Jennifer Snowe - San Francisco CA
I searched high and low for a voice a liked singing popular baby/children's songs... and this is it! Wonderful, soothing voice, but songs vary from peppy to lullaby-ish. Perfect for a little baby.

Wonderful for young and old - Alan Petsche - Castro Valley, CA
On my daily trek to the "MP3 Daily Deal" I noticed that the pick was a children's record and decided to pass. A day later, I thought I would at least preview a track or two (Hey Bo Diddley???). I'm so glad I did, this is a wonderful CD. I can't wait to share with my grandson. It's truly a record that we can both love. THANK YOU for bringing the music of Elizabeth Mitchell to us. I'm now going to check out Ida!!

Review Five Leaves Left

Five Leaves Left Best Review

I only recently heard of Nick Drake after watching the BBC documentary on him titled "Lost Boy: In Search of Nick Drake," and it was more a surreal film directed by the likes of Roger Waters than a simple film crew. (I found out later it was a radio program, so the visuals for this were an afterthought.) However, this doc was a labor of love, so I decided to search out Nick's music, especially after hearing a cross section of his only 3 album output.

This is my review for the first part of that trilogy, as some people have come to call it, "Five Leaves Left."

I was seriously blown away.

This came at me in a slow mellow come-easy mix of mental collages and slides through your mind like a good tasting sandwich with some cold icy water. Each song is filled a story of loss, or longing, or reaching out, and will crush any notions about what you may have heard in passing about Nick's bleak sad history.

Was he troubled? Yes. Was he in pain and depressed and on medications to somehow try and control him? Sure. Did he take them all the time, knowing it would squelch his creativity? No.

Nick, by all accounts, was depressive, and didn't care about the fame, and didn't want to be famous, but sadly after his death, he left music which is timeless for the listener, and could be anonymously be released now and it would have become a number one album for anyone who would want to claim it.

And that's my problem.

Music has evolved (without Nick) to such a point in the last 10 years that this kind of sound, the lone artist with the acoustic guitar/orchestral mix of sound, is so prevalent now it gets lost among the crashing swells of hip-hop, crappy rock and other mostly sorry excuses for music.

It's become so commonplace that it sits proudly on the lite rock/alternative stations worldwide and you can find any 19 year old with a guitar uploading their latest music online or on iTunes for you to download, and most of it all sounds like this. BUT... let's look at Nick's work first, because he pretty much originated this style. 10 songs at just under 60 minutes:

01. "Time Has Told Me" - this opening riff, with intimate lyrics and almost a country feel, reminds me so quickly of Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," which was recorded only a year later. Did Paul Simon hear this song and copy it, or was it a matter of coincidence? The lyrics here are definitely more upbeat, though...
02. "River Man" - this is one of the best songs on the album, hands down. It's intimate without trying, and it's an effortless mix of lyrics and song, and if you were to only hear one song on this album, this is Nick's Mt. Everest.
03. "Three Hours" - this song, even though the lyrics are upfront about a couple of men on a flight from the west to London, and the music has a slight Mediterranean feel, just somehow reminds me of Jesus on the cross - and it's odd yet wonderful alliteration if I'm able to do pull something from that! The song sounds so urgent, too...
04. "Way to Blue" - this has got to be one of the more psychedelic songs, and it is early 1969, after all... Nick was trying to pull every fleeting reference to slipping away and tripping away as he could out of his bag.
05. "Day Is Done" - this has Jim Croce's "Time In A Bottle" and especially "Lover's Cross" all over it, from the hurried minor chords on the guitar to the swelling orchestral background sweeping through it towards the middle and end. I knew it sounded familiar. Regardless, I like Nick's so much I'm willing to forgive Jim for it.
06. "'Cello Song" - this is such a strong song, and the lyrics toell the listener that it's OK, Nick's got it, he'll shield you from the madness and the badness, let him just play his music for you... and the cello doesn't hurt, either.
07. "The Thoughts of Mary Jane" - let's face it, this is the most polished and "commercial" of all the songs - for 1969. The veiled references to drugs, the lifting lyrics accompanied by flute, it pains me to say it, but this also the weakest song on the album, too. It's just too dated, no matter what many may say.
08. "Man in a Shed" - this song is funny and fun and at the same time so depressing and fruitless, but the song makes a point - loneliness can have it's merits - besides, "sheds are nicer than you thought"...
09. "Fruit Tree" - this song tells of the perils of the fleeting fame, and of friends, and of acquaintances who will love you one moment and say 'who was he?' the next, and the only place you are sure you can feel safe in this life was when you were in the womb, or as an a adult, a womb-like space, black and quiet. This song goes pretty deep, and it has it's moments.
10. "Saturday Sun" - to use the sun and moon and the rain and the sky as actual people are a theme in Nick's writing, but to put entire days together in a easy little song about Sunday's loss of his good friend Saturday? Wow...!

Nick was an pioneering inventor of the melding of intimate lyrics combined with the muted tones of the orchestra, kind of like Leonard Cohen, but not with all the depression attached to it. He was a genius as Syd Barrett was, and Mozart. All of them died young, forgotten for years, and then suddenly a new generation "finds" them and reveres them.

This is nothing new, but Nick's work is still very special, and worth take a listen to. I only took a star off because, honestly, some of the songs are a bit dated, but then again a new generation has "found" this style of playing music, and by God they're running with it.

Sorry to say, Nick would get trampled at the very temple of music he helped create, because they want their 15 minutes, and they'd hit anyone with an acoustic guitar to get there.

Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed my review, and please don't forget to comment - I am sometimes wrong, as we all are - and also don't forget to check out my other reviews as well!

Five Leaves Left Overview

Reissue of the late British folk icon's 1969 debut album. Ten tracks. Island.

Five Leaves Left Specifications

There's not a single dud in the trilogy of albums that singer/songwriter Nick Drake released during his all-too-short career. And 1968's Five Leaves Left--his first album--is certainly no exception. Drake's sensitive guitar work and sensitive vocals are backed by the baroque sounds of a chamber string group, and the platter's lyrics show maturity well beyond the age of their 20-year-old creator. Sparser than its follow-up, the jazzy Bryter Layter, but less tortured than Drake's dark final chapter, Pink Moon, Five Leaves Left is a classic British folk disc. Songs like "River Man," "The Thoughts of Mary Jane," and "Day Is Done" are among Drake's finest moments. Newcomers be forewarned: this music is as infectious as it is bleak, and a purchase of Drake's boxed set Fruit Tree might be a wise investment. --Jason Verlinde

One in Six Billion or so......... - great horse - georgia
My least favorite Drake and it is still stunning. Rare. A real talent. At about 20 years old hard to believe, live on in fame forever.

classic - William R. Nicholas - Mahwah, NJ USA
In a recent review, I called Tape from California by Phil Ochs a classic for its inventive, barouqe treatment of folk. On the other side of the pond, England, around the same time, Nick Drake created another classic, Five Leaves Left.

The similarities between Ochs and Drake are interesting. Both expaneded the guitar strumming scope of folk music with orcherstration, both suffered from depression--a much harder illness to treat in 1969. And both died young, Ochs from suicide and Drake from an accidental drug overdoese.

But Drake was more musically subtle . He wrote about deeply personal issues, not the political and social ideas Ochs choose, and while Tape From California features hapsichords and huge scores, Drake used quiet and yes depressed string sections. Listen to "Riverman" to hear Drakes more pastoral approach.

The quiet muted sound is from a quiet muted man. Drake often sings his Keatsian lyrics in a low tone, just above a whisper. You get the shy sadness of a broken young man in both the resignation of music and words.

Drake is not trying to overcome his sadness, but rests in it, sitting still to witness whatever beauty he may be able to see and feel. His music indicates that was a lot, and there is a classical grace and vurnerability to all the songs. Through these he is able make you experiance his own sadness and resignation, and immediately, you connect with Five Leaves Left.

Drake was also an excellent guitar player, and a lot of his songs have the impulse of celtic jazz. Backed by memebers of Pentangle and Fairport Convention, two of the best jazz-folk outfits in England then, these songs contain an expert ressonce that take them way beyond average folk.

Nick Drake=genius - Brian Pyles - Bakersfield,CA
Nick Drake isn't for everyone. This is his first recorded output and it is amazing. I can't lead a horse to water, nor make it drink but do yourself favor and have a sip from nick Drake has left us and savor every last last drop-do yourself a favor.

Review The Beatles 1

The Beatles 1 Best Review

In theory, '1' is a great idea; collect all the Number 1 singles from one of the greatest bands in pop history on one disc. Not only would such an album be an exceptional collection of music, it would also be very useful for fans, given the haphazard nature of some of The Beatles' compilations, and the fact that many of their singles never appeared on studio albums. And that's exactly what '1' delivers, all 27 (!) of the Fab Four's singles that reached #1 in either the UK or the US (or, often, both).

From an artistic viewpoint, there is certainly no arguing with the music here. This is simply some of the greatest music not just of its time but ALL time. From catchy pop songs, to folk-influenced minor chords and introspection, to ambitious psychedelic epics, The Beatles redefined the idea of what a rock band could do. Every song here is a classic, from the simple 'Love Me Do' to the sweeping orchestration of 'Penny Lane'. The songs are presented in chronological order, allowing us to follow their increasing ambition and complexity, and the packaging is generous, with a collection of photos from every era and a short essay by George Martin.

But as a collection, '1' falls just short of being the definitive collection it wants to be. I know it sounds very churlish to claim that an album containing 27 outstanding songs is lacking something, but it must be noted that some very important tracks are missing. Collecting only those singles that made #1 means the album leaves off songs that fell just short of #1 ('Please Please Me', 'Strawberry Fields Forever') or that formed the B-sides ('I Am The Walrus, 'Revolution'). There is no question that these four songs are an essential part of The Beatles' legacy, and their absence is noticeable as the album plays. For this reason, I would still recommend the 'Red' and 'Blue' collections ahead of this one, plus of course the original studio albums.

So I've got mixed feelings about '1'. Everything that's here deserves to be, and having so many important singles on a single CD is handy. But by definition the album is not quite as strong and comprehensive as it could be, and I can't recommend it ahead of 'Red' and 'Blue'.

The Beatles 1 Overview

Japanese exclusive reissue of 2000 compilation. This Toshiba/EMI pressing features an OBI strip (different from the last Japanese pressings issued in 1990) & an insert with Japanese text & lyrics in Japanese & English. Manufactured & pressed in Japan. Gatefold sleeve. 2003.

The Beatles 1 Specifications

Proving yet again their willingness to dice 'n' slice their burgeoning legacy into new--if not exactly fresh--product, the Fab Four Minus One have released this single-disc compendium of their No. 1 hits. Though obviously superfluous to the faithful (who may also find themselves quibbling over the precise definition of "No. 1 hit" and the exclusion of seeming contenders like "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields"), newly arrived visitors from the Pleiades star cluster and other neophytes will find it a concise and generous (nearly 80 minutes) single-disc introduction to the band's career-spanning, unparalleled dominance of pop music in the 1960s. But beyond being a mere trophy case of commercial success (and it won't be hard to find critics who'll argue that these singles aren't even the band's best work), it's also a Cliff's Notes take on a remarkable seven-year run of musical evolution, one that stretches from the neo-skiffle of "Love Me Do" through a remarkable synthesis of R&B, rockabilly, Tin Pan Alley, gospel, country, and classical that still defies efforts to effectively deconstruct it. This is the pop monument equivalent of the '27 Yankees and '90s Bulls; it's every bit as obvious and dominating--and just as essential. --Jerry McCulley

The Disadvantage of Chronology - W. David English - Somerville, Massachusetts
No one could dispute that this CD contains some of the most wonderful pop music ever recorded. My only reservation is that the chronological progression, however valuable as document, does not present some of these songs that well. Because "Love Me, Do" was their weakest song (I am certainly glad they recorded it---it put them on the map), this CD has a weak opening. "From Me To You" is not all that good, either, compared with other songs they did at the time. And "The Long and Winding Road", with the dread Phil Spector overdubs, sounds so little like the Beatles. So this CD both opens and ends weakly. And where is "Please Please Me", not only a wonderful song, but their first number one?

I guess it could been regarded as a musical trajectory---the artistic rise and fall of the Beatles. But it's a good CD to play on shuffle.

Think of how strongly "Pepper" and "Abbey Road" both begin and end. The Beatles 1 does not have this quality. But do not misunderstand, it is essential anyway.

Number 1 - B -
Ok this misses out some of the good No2's and lower Poisitioned songs, Sgt Pepper, Lucy in the sky with diamonds and I'am the Walrus for example. But you can't complain because all these songs are brilliant and thats all I need to say because I leave this album, to go by the bands reputation

Beatles Stil Rock - Treefox -
This CD is a good collection of Beatles songs. Every song is something I remember and liked! I would recommend this CD.

Review Colour the Small One

Colour the Small One Best Review

I was 22 and fell in love with a 19 year old local beauty in a famous beach town in California. She and I listened to this as friends and then as lovers. And then as slowly recovering broken hearts.

If you let her, Sia will penetrate your defenses and share with you on the deepest level her deepest emotions. Almost every song says something to me along my relationship roller coaster. If my ego were strong enough I would share this album with all my best friends.

Give this a shot and listen emotionally. This may be the most moving, beautiful, and painful album you've ever heard as it has been mine. I hope some day I can express myself just a fraction as well as this woman can. Buy this, love this, give it away, buy another copy.

Colour the Small One Specifications

Listening to Colour the Small One seems almost rude, as though you've just crept into someone's bedroom unannounced and read their diary, or even eavesdropped into a private conversation. A lot of this is down to Sia's voice; a soft, intimate, languorous affair that has the unsettling effect of being simultaneously sad and seductive. A couple of years on from her R&B-tinged debut and those classic pairings with Zero 7, the Australian vocalist has come a long way. The music here consists of basic frameworks of rhythm, enhanced by subtle percussion, folky harmonica and nothing more obtrusive than that secretive, melancholic voice. There's certainly room to breathe and Sia unfolds at her own leisurely pace. Opener "Rewrite" works the sad verse/sunny chorus formula to perfection, while "Sunday" turns "Strawberry Fields" harmonium into big orchestral trip-hop. "Sweet Potato" sours the flow, sounding contrived and too like Nelly Furtado for its own good, but "Bully", a collaboration with Beck Hansen, has a sweet melody that belies its subject matter. As cries for help go, this is up there with the best. --Paul Tierney

Music Theory

If you compose a piece of really nice (to you anyway) music you need to write it down so that you can remember it and other people will be able to play it too. Maybe you want to orchestrate your piece? Well, you have to know all about music theory and harmony to be able to do that, otherwise a Bb clarinet will be in the wrong key, or an Eb French horn will sound terrible instead of beautiful.

If you are learning an instrument you will have to learn music theory and harmony anyway, but many people treat this vital knowledge as unnecessary and just continue to try to play the notes because they sound nice. However all music students get to a stage quite early on in their progress of learning when they suddenly find that this, to some rather boring subject, is pretty useful and so have to go about trying to learn more about it.

Rather like one's knowledge of the English language, if you know lots of unusual words for instance, it enables you to read more interesting and complicated books, so with music.

If you can get to grips with music theory you can understand so much more about the music you are learning, and in due course you may well wish to compose a piece or two of your own, write it down, let your friends play it, or even publish it if you are good enough.

The usual steps are comparatively simple after that. You learn the rules of harmony, only to break them, no doubt with your own music, and see how the great composers harmonised their melodies in different ways. You discover how to put more than one tune into a piece and create co-existing melodies which become their own harmony within existing music structures. Bach's double violin concerto is a splendid example of this with what sounds like two violins wrapping around each other to create a wonderful effect.

So having got to this stage after quite a bit of study away from your beloved instrument, be it piano, guitar, double bass or French horn you may want to take a leap into composing either for your instrument, a group of instruments or even go the whole way and hazard an orchestral piece.

This takes no little talent but fortunately many people over the years have been able to give us the wonderful music that is generically termed 'classical', whether it was composed in 1700 or 2000. It may be a bit tedious at first, but if you stick with it music theory will give you pleasure for the rest of your life in your appreciation of the music of all ages.

California Plan to Supply Free Electronic Textbooks May Benefit Amazon Kindle DX

Marketing executives at Amazon  must have been rubbing their hands with glee after hearing Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's announcement of his state's first-in-the nation program to replace traditional paper textbooks with free online digital textbooks. This is not some vision of the future, the initiative is scheduled to commence in August of 2009. Science and Math textbooks will be the first subjects to be replaced with other areas to follow.

An initial list of standards aligned digital textbooks covering subjects such as geometry, trigonometry, calculus, physics, algebra, chemistry, biology and earth science course will be released in August. A number of electronic books have already been submitted and are in the review process. Academic publishers and content providers have been invited to submit further materials for review by the California Learning Resources network. The deadline for submission is June 15 to allow for review in time for the forthcoming academic year.

The second phase of the initiative, presently in development, will make the new digital textbooks available for all grades. Interactive content will be included and a state wide web site showcasing books available will be the long term goal.

The initiative has the potential to save Californian schools millions of dollars. It's estimated that a school district with around 10,000 high school students could save $2 million dollars by using free downloadable textbooks in just science and math classes. In 2008, the State of California spent $350 million on textbooks and other printed learning material. Upon the adoption of digital textbooks a significant portion of this money will become available for use in other areas.

Another advantage envisaged is that, because digital textbooks are more easily updated, it will be easier for students to learn about technological advances and current discoveries as they happen. Conventional paper textbooks tend to be updated, on average, every six years - which could meant that, at the back end of the cycle, students could be missing six years of information.

It also seems probable that alternative, interactive learning possibilities could be introduced once the scheme is up and running.

Now, it's probably worth noting that at no point in his announcement did Governor Schwarzenegger make any mention of Amazon's ebook reader - or any of its competitors for that matter. In fact he stated that it would be possible for schools to benefit even without computers or laptops as teachers could print out the material and that would still work out considerably cheaper than a conventional text book. So why is the internet buzzing about this "good news" for Amazon?

Well, the latest addition to the Amazon Kindle ebook reader family, the Kindle DX, launched on June 10 - just five days after Governor Schwarzenegger's announcement. It is a larger version of Amazon's recently released Kindle 2 having a 9.7" screen instead of a 6" one. Amazon has touted it as being ideal for reading newspapers, magazines and - wait for it - academic textbooks.

Amazon has already entered into agreements with at least three academic publishers and some higher education establishments have publicly announced that they make the Kindle available to their students. All things considered, Amazon is currently better placed to take advantage of a sudden introduction of new digital technology in the academic world than most of their competitors.

That's not to say that they will have things all their own way of course. Sony have partnered with Google to make Google's huge collection of public domain ebooks available to users of their PRS ebook reader, a clear sign that neither Google or Sony are willing to relinquish the potentially huge and lucrative ebook market to Amazon without a fight. Other competitors also exist and it will be interesting to see how they respond to developments in the market in general and the academic sector in particular.

In the meantime, it does seem as if Governor Schwarzenegger's innovative plan for California's educational future is likely to boost sales of Amazon's reader, Kindle accessories and books from Amazon's Kindle store. No doubt other states will consider similar schemes and the academic sector of the book market could hot up very quickly indeed. Of course, the academic textbook sector is only one market segment - but it does appear to be leading the way. It also offers Amazon and its competition an ideal chance to "get 'em while they're young" and establish brand recognition and loyalty which could influence buying decisions in later life.

Ereaders, How in the World Do I Pick the Best For My Needs? Let's Take an Unbiased Look and Find Out

As a way to really do an effective ereader comparison you will first want to make your wish list of only precisely what you need it to accomplish for you. I understand the first answer may be well duh I want to read a book with it.

Hello! Yes, if it were that simple it would mean you really don't need an ereader review of any kind and almost any model is going to do, but let's have a closer look at your personal needs and desires.

1. Do you want to take it everywhere with you? And how do you plan to carry it? If you're a morning commuter on the bus or train let's say or you do a quite a bit of airplane travel and you keep it in a briefcase or similar case the larger the screen the better so that you can cut down on eye strain. You will also want to be sure that it has a very good brightness adjustment feature so you can deal with all of the various light levels you will undoubtedly encounter all the time.

This is a big feature not to be overlooked because in a low light environment you want it to brighten and if the sun is streaming through the window on to your screen you are going to be glad you got the one that you can make the letters really dark and easy to read.

2. Do you take long trips with many hours on a flight and maybe even multi hour layovers stuck sitting in airports? If so one of your main concerns will be battery life and the amount of charge time it takes to repower your unit. If the one you're looking at lists an overnight charge time and does not have a quick charge feature you may wish to reconsider. Also, check the stats very carefully and see if it will charge while in use? Why? Well, when you're waiting at the airport do you see all the other people with their laptops plugged in? Yes, then you could plug in too and have your ereader charging while you're also reading and not wasting time twiddling your thumbs wishing you were still reading that can't put down book.

3. If you take your ereader with you ANYWHERE and I do mean ANYWHERE then before you actually make your purchase be certain that there is a stylish but very durable, tough and shock resistant case available that you really like. It can be super frustrating to have already bought your ereader only to find out all the ereader cases leave a LOT to be desired.

Also on this vein check to see that your particular model you want is has a slew of accessories, trust me you will want them even more if you can't have them and you will only be disappointed. One accessory to be sure of is a reading light. You know the little clip on lights so you can read your new ereader at night on your plane ride. Don't be fooled by companies marketing one size fits all, it's not true, there are some models that none of the cool aftermarket lights fit and so cool or not you're stuck getting only the one THEY sell.

The idea thread of this theme is that you should analyze your needs and then go find the best deals. Heck without naming names I have seen one company that even has Free books for many of the ereaders they carry. Last time I checked Free was good, so when you see those you need to snatch them up before they trade them out.

A great source for Free Ereader Books and more cool tips and tricks can be found at=> http://www.buyereader.org/ereader-comparison P. Shelley dug into all of the ereader comparisons out there when looking for his own ereader and you can see the results when you check out the site.

Kindle DX Reviews

When it comes to making the choice as to what e-book reader is right for you, the first thing that many people realize is that there is a whole lot of choices. Which one to choose though really depends on what you are looking for in a device. Perhaps you would like the ability to store up to 3,500 e-books on one device or maybe you would like a reader whose batteries won't die before you are finished reading. Or perhaps you would like one that does not require you hooking it up to your computer every time you would like to add to your library. If you are like most people, these are the things that you are looking for and what that means is that you are in need of a Kindle DX.

This latest version of the popular e-book reader has gone through a drastic overhaul while still maintain many of the great features that people have grown to love about it. It still features the automatically rotating display that is composed of Amazon's e-ink design. This new version though, unlike it predecessor is capable of supporting PDF files without the need for an online conversion.

This PDF support has been a much anticipated update due to the popularity of this file format with regards to online reading material. Of course you cannot help but notice the Amazon Kindle DX's increased display size because unlike its 6 inch predecessor, this display is an amazing 9.7 inches. That makes reading those books a much simpler process, especially if your eyes are not what they used to be. Many people have heard that the new device is being released and they are searching all over the web for Kindle DX reviews, but the truth is that if you like the previous models, then you will definitely love this one.

Review Chess in Concert

Chess in Concert Best Review

My husband introduced this to me on CD many years ago. The version he had was from the 1986 production in England with the original cast (including Elaine Paige). He actually got to see it live in England. The original CD was a great way to get to know the story because some of the words get pretty complex in some of the songs. The complexity of the music is something I really love so the trouble with hearing some of the words doesn't take anything away from how great I think this is. It's well worth watching more than once to pick up all the details. This version with Josh Groban & Idina Menzel was such a joy to see & hear. Josh Groban has a beautiful strong voice and I wish he'd do more productions like this. His abilities to portray the emotion appropriate to the story was something that really made this so engaging. I loved watching his acting as much as hearing his singing. Idina Menzel is always great on stage and she was the perfect choice for the role of Florence. Adam Pascal as Freddie also did an amazing job. The entire cast gave such incredible performances. Top all that with London Philharmonic & the 100 member West End Chorus and the results are outstanding! All of the music is so memorable and interesting thanks to Tim Rice from ABBA for the story & lyrics & Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus for the music. I'm thrilled that this was redone and available on DVD!! I would love to have seen this one live.

Chess in Concert Overview

Starring multiplatinum artist Josh Groban, Tony-winning Idina Menzel (Wicked) and Tony nominated Adam Pascal (RENT), Chess In Concert revives the eclectic yet wonderfully pop 1984 concept album featuring the music of ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and lyrics of Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, The Lion King, Evita). Recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall in May 2008, this spectacular Chess In Concert - introduced by Rice and with the 50- piece City of London Philharmonic and 100-voice West End Chorus - finally fulfills the promise of the popular cult musical.

Chess - Teresa J. Weisgerber -
As a fan of Josh Groban, I was anxious to view his performance in Chess. I was not disappointed. The entire production was well done and quite enjoyable to watch. The DVD package was very nice, as well.

Good, but not great - Anne B. - Tarrytown, NY United States
I got this video, because Josh Groban is in it -- and I'm currently obsessed with him. He gave a superlative performance, hopefully assuring that he'll have more chances to do musical theater, which is, apparently, what he really wants to do.

Curiously, there were only three really top notch solo voices in the piece: Josh Groban, David Bedella, and Clarke Peters. The other soloists had disappointing vocal instruments. It seems odd to me that it is apparently so hard to find people who can really sing.

The chorus and dancing were well done.

The story is not so hot. It's overly complex and contrived. The motivations of the main characters are puzzling. Why does Anatoly leave his more attractive wife for this strange chess groupie, for instance? Perhaps it's the acting. The three I mentioned above who sing well, also manage to convey more drama in their roles. The others seem superficial, not truly engaged in their parts. As a result the whole thing lacks the emotional drama it should have.

I'm glad I got it, though, because I wanted to hear Josh & that I got from this. He just sort of blew everyone else off the stage.

Reworked again - John Bernhardt - Falmouth, Ma United States
Recorded live at Royal Albert Hall, London, May 12-13, 2008
There is also a single CD Highlights version and DVD version which were released both in the United States and Europe. This concert version stars Josh Groban and was taped a full year before it's release. This is yet another reworking of the ever changing Andersson-Rice-Ulvaeus musical.

This time, Tim Rice took the lead on the redo duties. Bjorn Ulvaeus Andersson and Benny did not get directly involved with this concert ,though perhaps they had a veto, if they did not like the project as a whole. This record is an attempt to issue a fairly complete version of the musical, based generally on the original London staging. Somewhat annoyingly, Tim Rice has once again changed a few lyrics. On the plus side, you get to hear a few of the songs that were written long ago, which had not been available on any recording of CHESS (other then a temporary release on the original version of the Danish Version of Chess) the songs are "Commie newspapers"," Press conference", "Global TV fanfare", "Talking Chess" and "The Interview". These are not great songs, but it's still nice to have them. Most of the songs found only on the American Broadway staging did not make it on this recording, but otherwise this concert is really complete Chess score.

The album was recorded live, and as a result many of the performances sound a little shaky. Another problem for me with any re-recording or theatrical staging of Chess is losing out on getting Benny Andersson and the ABBA band play the music as it meant to be played. I would say that if you want the definitive CHESS album it would seem that it is still your best bet to go back to the original 1984 studio album.

Performers include Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, David Bedella, Kerry Ellis, Clarke Peters, Marti Pellow ; The City of London Philharmonic ; The West End Chorus ; arranged and orchestrated by Anders Eljas ; David Firman, conductor, musical supervisor. Liner notes by Tim Rice and synopsis in container.

Softball Coaching Tips - On Using MP3 Players and Cellphones

The great thing with today's technology is that it has made it easy for almost everyone to communicate and enjoy their favorite music.

With cellular phones, you can get connected with your friends and colleagues every time through calls and text messages. And with the newer generation of these phones, you can even receive your email, get directions through GPS, and check the web almost everywhere.

And in the case of MP3 players, you can now bring along your music with you anywhere you go. With today's batch of players, you can literally bring along with you thousands of songs in a little package. That's of course way better than lugging around a bunch of tapes and a humongous Walkman, for those old enough to remember what I'm talking about.

But for all the benefits of these gadgets, they could also be detrimental to your players' performance when taken in the context of softball. These gadgets could cause a major distraction to your players that could prevent them from performing well, or from immediately getting what you're trying to tell them.

The secret here is that you, as the coach, should help your players strike the balance between the benefits of using these gadgets and their negative effects on your players' game.

So how do you prevent your players from getting distracted by MP3 players and cellphones? Here are some of my suggestions:

1. Tell them to keep their cellular phones in their bags during team-oriented activities. These activities include practices, meals with teammates and of course, games. Tell them that they can only use their cellular phone before and after these activities. However, if they really need to use this device,, let them ask for your permission first.

2. Let them use their MP3 players when you think it can benefit them. Ever noticed how plugging earphones on your ears can help you focus on the task you're doing? This kind of focus brought about by MP3 players can be beneficial to your players.

So let them use it during practice or training. But advise them not to turn it up too loud so that they can still hear you just in case you have to tell them something.

Aside from practices, you can also let them use their players during long trips to help them feel psyched and help prevent boredom.

Finally, listening to music can also help them relax before games and while doing their warm-ups, so you tell them to use their players during those times.

But remember that some players might prefer to do away with MP3 players. So all in all, using MP3 players during the occasions I've mentioned should be optional.

3. Absolutely no distractions when you're talking to them. When you're talking, you want your team to listen. So you should keep their attention away from their gadgets and let them focus on what you're saying. That way, they don't miss any concept, strategy or advice that you want to tell them.

Again, it's about helping your players balance the benefits of MP3 players and cellular phones to their game. When you want to keep them from getting bored during road trips, or help them focus while training, these gadgets would be really helpful.

But if it's about listening to what you're saying or doing team-oriented activities, then these things should be a no-no.

There you have it, another softball coaching tips for you on using MP3 players and cellphones.

Music Of Spain

Flamenco music is a form of authentic southern Spanish art form. It can be explained well if divided in three forms -- firstly Cane the song, Baile the dance and Guitarra the guitar. Spanish music has been influenced by a number of cultures and that is due to the fact that many diverse cultured countries dominated Spain. Gypsies are synonymous to Spain and can definitely be called the Fathers of Spanish music. The legendary Tartessos, the songs and dances of Andalusia, and the Muslims were all factors which greatly influenced the Spanish music.

It is very difficult to assess in what way and context the music of Spain was influenced but it surely gave rise to a number of different styles and manners which was quite different from the rest of Europe.

The Romans, Greeks and the Moors greatly affected the composition of music in the early period. The music of the Christian Church in Spain is known as Mozarabic chant. Arabic music influenced Spanish instrumental music during the early Renaissance. During the early 16th century, polyphonic style of music originated in Spain. It was kind of related to the style of Franco-Flemish composer. Artists like Antonio Soler got inspired by Italian models, this was during the arrival of Classicism. The famous Madrid Court appointed the famous and renowned Italian composers such as Domenico Scarlatti and Luigi Boccherini.

Many music festivals were organized and these actually originated to boost local tourism. The local tourists have great interest in music and many measures were taken to make music more famous and popular. Rock and roll and pop are famous kinds of music and many famous pop stars in Spain are females. Ye Ye is another form of music which is a fusion of American rock and British beat music. Some of Spain's famous singers are Miguel Bose, Rosa Lopez, Enrique Iglesais and many more. Some of the famous pop groups are Los Bravos, Ketama, Greta, Pereza, and Falling Kids.

Regional folk music with folk based singers and song writers are also a part of Spain's music. As in the Basque Country, Cantabrian folk music features intricate arch and stick dances but tabor pipes did not play such a predominant role. Aside with a rich tradition for rebec, a popular instrumental setting encompasses drum and alto clarinet players. All over Castile there is also a strong tradition of dance music for dulzaina and rondalla groups. Popular rhythms include 5/8 charrada and circle dances, joya and habas verdes.
