If you've played the Ruby or Sapphire installments, you'll recognize many of the locations in Emerald. Although familiar, quite a lot has changed in Emerald. The most exciting addition is Battle Frontier. No matter how well you think you know Hoenn, you will always discover something entirely new. Plus, you may even encounter a new Gym Leader in your journeys.
You are up against stiff competition in Emerald. Team Magma and Team Aqua once again look to disrupt the peaceful civility of Hoenn. Unlike Ruby and Sapphire, both gangs have set up camp in this adventure. That means you'll be facing double-the-evil, double-the-clever, scheming plans. To really spice things up, Emerald has added sightings of the rare Pokemon Rayquaza. The plot thickens!
The Battle Frontier of Pokemon Emerald brings together seven battle facilities. Each area provides a unique battle experience. Special Trainers called Frontier Brains head each facility and they will test every aspect of your combat skills. Your victories will be memorialized in the form of Frontier Symbols, and you must defeat the Frontier Brain at each location several times in order to earn your awards.
With new locations like Battle Dome, Battle Arena, Battle Factory, and Battle Pike, Pokemon Emerald will throw you awesome new twists and challenges. The new adventure in Hoenn is full of adventure and has plenty of opportunities to hone your battle skills. Great game! (2009-02-15)
I purchased this for my grandson. It is a game that is not produced any longer, so it was used. Had a little problem with the first one that arrived - it ended up not working entirely and my grandson lost about a month's worth of gaming because he brought over some Pokemon from another game and the Emerald game that he had did not save. He lost everything. We contacted the person that sent it to us and they very very very graciously replaced the game and he is having a wonderful time with it now.

NOT REALLY SURE HOW GOOD GAME IS. WHEN I PLAYED THIS GAME IT HAD A VIRUS AND I COULDN"T GET REIMBURSED THROUGH SELLER OR GET EXCHANGE. AND AMAZON WOULDN'T STAND BEHIND IT EITHER.
Great game, but not as great as Diamond (2009-01-07)
I bought this game a bit after buying Pokemon Diamond and played them both alternately. sadly, the great game play of Diamond kind of ruined Emerald for me. it's so easy to compare the two and find faults w/ Emerald. overall, it's a great game and I like the fact that you can re-challenge the gym leaders (though you can't re-challenge the trainers leading up to the gym leader), and I like the battle frontier. I despise the Pokenav, especially the fact that having certain Pokemon on your team will cause you to get more inane calls more often. it pales in comparison to the Vs. Seeker of Diamond. I also wish they had the day/night set up Diamond has (I know, I know, I'll try not to compare the games so much!).
the biggest pro of this game, and the main reason why I'd encourage fans to buy it, is for the ability to migrate Pokemon onto your Diamond or Pearl game so easily. this will seriously help you, not only complete your pokedex in D/P but also help you snag and/or breed some different pokemon (for example, Ditto is quite common in a certain area in Emerald, and you can get an Eevee in Diamond, so by migrating a Ditto, you can breed for the different evolved forms of Eevee). another added pro to this is that you can catch both legendary pokemon from Ruby and Sapphire, along w/ a third legendary. by the way, you can also migrate items, which is useful since you can create multiple shell bells in Emerald and migrate them to the new game, along w/ evolution stones, battle items, and different flutes
if you don't have Ruby or Sapphire (or even if you do but are willing to splurge) and you have Diamond or Pearl, Emerald is a must have game, not only for good game play, but also for the ability to truly catch 'em all!
Classic Pokemon play on the Gba...well worth it. (2009-01-06)
Well, I've played every version of Pokemon on a portable game system there is to play, from the humble beginnings to their latest incarnation on the DS. This one being a "third" Pokemon game (Ruby and Saphire are the first two), it's a worthy addition for a Pokemon fan to own. The graphics are crisp and clear, plus the in-game animation is top notch for a Gba game. If you haven't played either Ruby or Saphire, this would be a good bet. I was taken by surprise when there was a new starter set to choose from. Even though the basic types are the same, the different Pokemon had me happily enjoying Pokemon all over again. I can't say this would be worth getting if you already own either Ruby or Saphire, but Pokemon fanatics might still want to pick it up as part of their collection. Note: For this review, I did not play or own Ruby or Saphire.
I recommend playing this game on the DS versus the Gba, as the screen brightness of the DS will make it that much more enjoyable, unless you own the newest Gba with the brighter screen.
Pros:
Graphics are crisp and clear, animation is excellent
Sounds are good, even from the Gba speaker
Many different types of Pocket Monsters to choose for your team
Cons:
No day/night cycle!
Same old Pokemon story if you already own Ruby or Saphire
A little dated now with the release of Pearl and Diamond
Bottom Line:
Worth getting for any Pokemon fan or if you are new to the series. This would be a good game to get. Despite it's age, Emerald doesn't fail to deliver the Pokemon. Still gotta catch 'em all!
