Thriller Specifications

Where Off the Wall was pretty much straight good times, Thriller introduced dread into Michael Jackson's solo work. By 1995's HIStory, this element curdled into overwhelming self-regard and out-of-touchness, but here it's bracing. While Thriller offers its share of cute ("The Girl Is Mine," a duet with Paul McCartney that was the album's first single; "P.Y.T."), the most memorable cuts remain "Billie Jean," "Beat It," and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," all of which meld musical imagination and worried-mind lyrics.
There's also the title track, which takes a cue from Parliament's concept pieces in employing Vincent Price to warn that nonfunky forces will "terrorize y'all's neighborhood." Thriller, of course, continues to battle with the Eagles' first greatest-hits package for the title of biggest-selling U.S. long-player ever. Bonus material on this edition includes "Someone in the Dark," from Jackson's E.T. children's album, and a Quincy Jones interview in which the producer cites "My Sharona" as the inspiration for "Beat It"--and, even better, the real-life Billie Jean's claim that Michael was "the father of one of her twins." --Rickey Wright

"It's an exciting time to be Wanda Jackson," Austin's American-Statesman declared in October on the eve of Jackson's 73rd birthday bash at the Continental Club there. The undisputed Queen of Rockabilly - a touring powerhouse for more than 50 years - is releasing her debut disc for Third Man/Nonesuch Records, the aptly titled The Party Ain't Over.

This collection of vintage and contemporary covers was produced by fan and new-found friend Jack White at his Nashville studio and recorded with a late-night honky-tonk feel by members of My Morning Jacket, the Raconteurs, and Dead Weather, among others. The White-curated lineup of tunes, says Jackson, showcases "all the various types of music that I've done through the years-some country, some gospel, some rockabilly, some rock n' roll. It's got all of that, and we threw in a Bob Dylan song 'Thunder On the Mountain,' just to be safe."

The spirited Jackson, revered for such classic singles as "Let's Have a Party" and "Fujiyama Mama," proves that brash rock and roll attitude need not have an age limit. Her trademark growl remains intact on rockers like "Rip It Up" and "Nervous Breakdown"; she opens the set with an echo-laden sneer on a rollicking version of "Shakin' All Over" and ends it 10 songs later with a plaintive take on Jimmie Rodgers' "Yodel #6." Along the way she tackles the Andrew Sisters kitschy "Rum and Coca Cola" and a big-band rendition of the DeCastro Sisters' "Teach Me Tonight," and she out-sasses-and out-classes-Amy Winehouse on a cover of the British bad girl's "You Know I'm No Good," which has already been released as a single.

This two-disc retrospective -- which includes favorites like "Constant Craving" and "Smoke Rings," as well as ten tracks that never appeared on k.d. lang albums; and interpretations of classic songs like Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and The Hollies "The Air That I Breathe" -- illustrates how lang got to this significant point in her career, 25 years after the independent release of her debut, A Truly Western Experience. As lang moved from the subversively whimsical cow-punk sound of her early career in Western Canada to a broader pop palette, she has shown an ever-increasing sophistication, both as songwriter and interpreter. Dramatic, country-meets-lounge opener "Trail of Broken Hearts," from her 1989 Grammy Award-winning Absolute Torch and Twang album, encapsulates where she came from and where she was heading. The luxurious adult pop of "Constant Craving," from the platinum-selling 1992 Ingenue, garnered her a Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female Grammy and remains her best known and most successful single. The effervescent "Miss Chatelaine," also from Ingenue, remains a concert favorite and "I Dream of Spring," is a particularly lush example of what she so artfully created for the acclaimed Watershed.

Her bravura rendition of "Crying," originally cut with Orbison for the soundtrack to the movie Hiding Out, has become a showstopper in her live performances, perhaps rivaled only be her beautifully restrained version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." This soaring signature tune appears here as both a new recording, and in its original studio version. On her 2004 Nonesuch debut, Hymns of the 49th Parallel, she explored the work of her fellow Canadian songwriters, including Neil Young ("Helpless") and the woefully underrated Jane Siberry (the sublime "The Valley"). Regardless of its source, her choice of cover material has always been inspired, as evidenced by her take on the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe," Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," the Beatles' Golden Slumbers," and Chris Isaak's "Western Stars," produced by Nashville legend Owen Bradley, Patsy Cline's mentor, for Shadowlands. lang is equally adept with such standards as Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" and "So In Love," and the jazz classic Moonglow" (performed here with Tony Bennett), and that has endeared her to a multi-generational audience.

It's fitting that the Kid Rock revival got started when the Beastie Boys featured him in their Grand Royal magazine--and not because the kid from Detroit shares their skin tone. Rock has often been compared with the early Beasties--the boys of "Fight for Your Right to Party" and "Brass Monkey," the boys no one ever thought would grow up. Alice Cooper's widely anticipated new album, Welcome 2 My Nightmare, recorded with longtime collaborator Bob Ezrin, who produced the original multi-platinum "Welcome To My Nightmare" album in 1975, picks up right where they left off, with Alice trapped in his own warped mind.
The original release is an all-time rock classic that spawned a worldwide theatrical tour and pioneering U.S. TV special, and certified Alice Cooper as a visionary trailblazer whose influence persists today in rock, metal, pop, punk, theatre, television, film and much more. More than 35 years later, Alice and Ezrin have resurrected the horror and humor for a new generation.
There is an array of collaborators on the new album, including original Alice Cooper members Denis Dunaway, Michael Bruce and Neal Smith reunited on 3 tracks; global pop superstar Ke$ha, who affectionately calls Alice "dad"; and legendary Alice and Lou Reed guitarist Steve Hunter, who is part of Alice's current touring band and featured prominently on the first "Nightmare" album.
Musically, the album ranges far and wide, from trashing disco to garage punk, pop balladry to a rocking number, very much in the spirit of the Rolling Stones. And then there's the ballad "Something To Remember Me By," described by Alice as "the prettiest song we have ever released."
Glimpses of themes from the original album are intertwined throughout, each track representing a different aspect of Alice's nightmare.
From the opener, "I Am Made Of You," through the already established live favorite and first single "I'll Bite Your Face Off," to the surprising duet with Ke$ha, "What Baby Wants," this album is a reminder that albums just aren't made this way anymore.
And musicians do not play together like Dennis Dunaway, Michael Bruce and Neal Smith anymore.
"I wanted a `70s feel for `When Hell Comes Home,' says Alice, "and I didn't even have to ask for it, it's just how they play and they did it live in the studio. When they got done playing the basic track, Bob and I just looked at each other, that sound is built into their DNA. We didn't need to go and fix anything. The way they finished was a little bit ragged, and that's the way we used to finish songs, that's what I like about it."
Co-writers on various songs include the aforementioned Bob Ezrin, Ke$ha, Dunaway, Bruce and Smith, plus Buckcherry's Keith Nelson, Desmond Child (who famously co-wrote and produced "Poison" with Alice), longtime collaborator Dick Wagner, current touring band member Chuck Garric, and film composer Jeremy Rubolino.
"That's my rebellion," says Alice of the more surprising guests, "I like people that don't belong and yet what they're doing works perfectly. I don't care where it comes from, as long as it's right. If you tell me something doesn't work, I'll work my head off until it does then shove it down your throat."
"I think a lot of my audience is going to go 'KE$HA!?', but she probably wrote the most wicked lyrics in the song - we had to rein her in. I like people to know that just because artists are put in a pigeon hole, that doesn't mean that's what they are. Give people a little room."
With Steve Hunter, one of rock's great guitarists, added to the band's lineup of guitarists Damon Johnson and Tommy Henriksen, bassist Chuck Garric, and drummer Glen Sobel, Alice has been tearing up venues worldwide on his 2011 "No More Mr. Nice Guy" tour.
Alice gave fans an up close and highly personal experience in June with a surprise performance at London's legendary 100 Club, when actor Johnny Depp joined the band on guitar. Alice showcased the powerful band that had blown away the Download Festival crowd the previous weekend.
This year, the original Alice Cooper group was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, and Alice was honored with both the Kerrang! Icon Award in the U.K. and the Revolver Golden God Award in the U.S.

East Tennessee singer-songwriter Rodney Atkins scored a chart-topper with the title track of this second release, reframing the Irish drinking toast ("May you be in heaven five minutes before the devil knows you're dead") in a modern context and tying it all up in a Celtic/banjo wrapping fit for Keith Urban. It's a solid effort, and performed with unusual aplomb for a newcomer. But as the rest of the album shows, Atkins seems torn between being a thoughtful, poetic craftsman ("Angel's Hands," "Invisibly Shaken," "A Man on a Tractor") and a hero for redneck simpletons. On the opening "These Are My People," he works the family-values-and-small-town stereotypes to death, continuing with "About the South," a Charlie-Daniels-as-God number on which he's backed by an irritating group of chorines that sound suspiciously like the Hee Haw Hunnies. Which path will Atkins ultimately choose, NPR or Wal-Mart? His second single, "Watching You"--a doing-everything-like-Daddy paean--probably tells the tale. --Alanna Nash

Doomsday scenarios are often predictive about an ending in life, revealing just what would occur if the world pushed itself to the brink of extinction. And the term "endgame" typically parallels such thinking, often evoking concepts of finality or termination.
But for Rise Against, this particular endgame might just be their beginning.
As the title of the band's sixth full-length studio album--and the moniker of the album's title track--Endgame is indicative of both a world that has run its course, and perhaps ushering in an entirely new start.
"It's about a dangerous time in civilization, the end of life," says vocalist/guitarist Tim McIlrath. "What if the life that we're living right now is this unsustainable bubble that cannot go on and perhaps does not deserve to go on? What if the world we created is a place that is so unnatural and ugly that it is a world that needs to come to an end, so that we could have a world that is better for everybody? It sounds very utopian, but it's not about a perfect place, but maybe some of these things we're doing, they need to come to an end."
McIlrath, bassist Joe Principe, drummer Brandon Barnes and guitarist Zach Blair have been making these striking personal and political statements, and providing prompts of great magnitude throughout their remarkable catalog by offering songs that aren't just merely sung, but very much thought about.
And it's thought that has made Rise Against such an important band to its ever-expanding fanbase. For the Chicago-based punk group, the creation of dialogue and discourse with listeners has allowed for a response and career trajectory that's been overwhelmingly positive since the band's launch over a decade ago.
Rise Against's previous effort, 2008's Appeal to Reason, further escalated the noteworthy attention already generated by prior successes, including The Sufferer and the Witness (2006) and Siren Song for the Counterculture (2004), which had provided such hits as "Swing Life Away," "Ready to Fall," "Prayer of the Refugee" and "Savior." And Endgame simply picks up on such highlights.
Endgame was largely assembled in the latter half of 2010. The band opted to return to production veterans Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colo., and mixed with Chris Lord-Alge, who also worked on Rise Against's previous two albums.
The album's first single, "Help Is On The Way" was inspired by McIlrath's recent visit during a retreat in New Orleans.
"It was a post-Katrina New Orleans, and I was down at the Gulf, going to the Lower Ninth Ward, seeing the damage and meeting people," he recalls. "It was so eye opening to see how important the city was and to realize that a city like this existed within American borders at all and to see how much it was hurting was something that was really emotional and dramatic."
McIlrath notes that the song stems from a lot of that imagery that remains embedded in his thoughts.
"I wanted to paint a picture of what happened down there and what is happening down there, and even though New Orleans is moving away from the spotlight a little bit, there's still a lot recovery that people don't see that takes place every day and it's still an important place in America and in the world. It's a place that should not be forgotten about. It's a hopeful title in a sense, but there are a couple different things, as in help is on the way but it never came. It still needs a lot more help, it still needs to happen."
On Endgame, Rise Against also shifts the spotlight to homophobia via "Make it Stop," a topic McIlrath says really hasn't been addressed in the rock scene. The catalyst for the song occurred in September 2010, after a wave of gay teen suicides. According to McIlrath, the band received e-mails from gay fans who had contemplated suicide due to the harsh climates in which they live and the harsh world that judges who they are.
"That's something I've seen firsthand," he says. "It's bummed me out to create this community of fans, where you want everybody to feel accepted, but then to realize that there are people that don't feel accepted, even at your own shows, even at a Rise Against show, where we go out of our way to let you know that if you are here, you belong here, no matter who you are. It's a place where everyone is welcome. But we'd hear from fans about homophobia in the scene, or even hear from fans who are unsure about how Rise Against feels about homosexuality. That was what alarmed me the most, was to have a fan that even had a question in their mind about where we stood on it. I guess I looked back on our career and Rise Against had never made a definitive statement."
The definitive statement Rise Against makes on Endgame is that the band is open to any sexual preference. "It's something that we certainly don't judge," McIlrath says. "I felt there needed to be a song, which came from our world, because I feel that the rock world stays pretty silent. I wanted to put water where the fire was. I wanted to do a song that, first, lets fans know that we don't tolerate bigotry in our audience and, second, empower fans who are coming to grips with their own sexuality, empower them to be proud of who they are and that we accept them, and create a community that accepts them."
Endgame also features "Architect," a song inspired by the forefathers and historical figures of civil rights and activism, including Thoreau, Malcolm X and Howard Zinn.
"They were designing a world in which we would be able to live in," McIlrath says. "They fought for the design of everything that we can enjoy as Americans and people in the world today. The song is posing the question: Is our generation producing those architects now? It's wondering if our generation is so overcome with cynicism and apathy that we are in danger of not creating these architects. Every right that we enjoy as Americans, somebody was out there with a picket sign to get it."
And McIlrath sees Endgame's "Survivor Guilt" as a sequel to "Hero of War," which appeared on Appeal to Reason, hailing from the perspective of a ghost of a soldier who fought for his or her country.
But it's important to note that the spectrum of material presented on Endgame is counterbalanced with a number of personal subjects, including the song "This Is Letting Go" which is based around a story McIlrath had penned.
"The songs to me are a selection of who we are as people," says McIlrath. "We're not 100 percent political or 100 percent personal. We're people with many different cares and passions. Many different things make up our daily lives. I don't consider myself any more political than those out there who care about the world they live in."
And as for the pressure in following up its string of successes--which now includes three gold-awarded albums and gold singles--McIlrath says it's all internally generated.
"The pressure that we feel is the pressure that we put on ourselves," he says. "We try to step up our game on each record and create something that's relevant, new and fresh, and is still Rise Against. I want to give my perspective, and from the punk community, take in what's happening, interpret that and put it into a song, letting the world know how we feel about it. That's the goal behind a lot of the music."

Writer-director Alan Parker's feature debut Bugsy Malone is a pastiche of American movies, a musical gangster comedy set in 1929, featuring prohibition, showgirls, and gang warfare, with references to everything from Some Like It Hot to The Godfather. Uniquely, though, all the parts are played by children, including an excellent if underused Jodie Foster as platinum-blonde singer Tallulah, Scott Baio in the title role and a nine-year-old Dexter Fletcher wielding a baseball bat. Cream-firing "spluge guns" sidestep any real violence and the movie climaxes cheerfully with the biggest custard pie fight this side of Casino Royale (1967).
Unfortunately for a musical, Paul Williams's score--part honky-tonk jazz homage, part 1970s Elton John-style pop--lets the side down with a lack of memorable tunes. Nevertheless, Parker's direction is spot on and the look of the film is superb, a fantasy movie-movie existing in the same parallel reality as The Cotton Club and Chicago. A rare British love letter to classic American cinema, Bugsy Malone remains a true original; in Parker's words "the work of a madman" and one of the strangest yet most stylish children's films ever made. --Gary S. Ali hits most of the clichés of the genre: defying Tess's skepticism by proving her mettle during an impromptu stage number; flirting with the nice-guy bartender (Cam Gigandet, of Twilight) whose home she shares for a while, in a purely platonic way, of course, just until she gets her feet on the ground; and keeping a wary eye on the high roller (Eric Dane, of Grey's Anatomy) who wants to possess her, because, you see, he takes whatever he likes. And did we mention that Tess is facing foreclosure on the club in a month's time? Seriously, you didn't see that coming? Writer-director Steve Antin has no embarrassment about putting any of this across, which may be why it all feels weirdly innocent, if relentlessly silly. Stanley Tucci revives his gay assistant from The Devil Wears Prada, Alan Cumming lurks about in an undefined role that might well have been filmed months after everybody else, and Kristen Bell enjoys a few wicked-witch moments as Ali's main rival. Aguilera, needless to say, belts out her songs as only someone with a very large voice can, and Cher stops the show with an old-fashioned torch song ("You Haven't Seen the Last of Me") that is clearly designed as a roof-raiser. (And, by gum, it works.) This is a ridiculous movie, but it gets points for never claiming to be anything else. --Robert Horton

Production music refers to music that is owned by production music libraries.
Generally the music is composed specifically for use in Film, TV, Radio, Multimedia and Business.

Production music gives producers and directors a platform from which to choose audio that is suitable for their project or brief. Libraries often have tracks relevant to current musical genres, styles, charts and culture. Many libraries will hold music across the entire spectrum of music history and include Classical, Jazz, Blues, Rock n Roll, Dance and Reggae - amongst a host of contemporary collections or themes created for business or media applications.
The convenience factor means that anyone who needs production library music can choose from a huge range of styles, access the audio from one place and know exactly how much it will cost. Most libraries have Rate Cards so producers can budget for the costs of a project in advance.
Their is also the peace of mind that many libraries will almost always have a piece of music suitable for the job and if not will help you to find some. Many will also offer custom music production services.
History of Production Music
Typical music for production has been around since the days of silent cinema. In those days the audio was supplied in written form and sent over to small orchestras and bands who would perform the sound live in time with the film.
Since then many production music companies have built up sound and audio libraries. These include Boozy & Hawkes, Cavendish, Sonoton, Extreme Music, EMI, Sony BMG, KPM, De Wolfe and many others.
Traditionally, music libraries sent out their music collections on CD. These days it is more likely to be accessed via the internet, file-downloading, hard drive or CD's, CD-Rom, DVD-Rom
Production Music Online
The Internet has enabled music for production to be distributed online via downloading. It has also given a platform for new companies and libraries to set up independently.
There are now many production music libraries online. The quality and price can vary enormously as can the actual license terms or use of the music. However production music downloads now seem to be the preferred method for many media professionals around the world.
Royalty Free Music
Royalty free music varies slightly to the attributes of production music.
Production music has generally been licensed on a pay-per-use basis. That is you pay for every single use of the music - If you want to use music on a TV show then you license the rights for that. If you want to additionally use that music on an interactive CD-Rom then you would have to license those rights.
Royalty free music on the other hand offers customers a way of purchasing a CD of the music which can then be used as many times as you like without any further payments or fees.
However the Internet and other issues has meant that many royalty free music libraries now operate more like traditional production music libraries and vice versa.
This is most likely attributed to the growth of independent music libraries who can create their own license and finance models according to their own marketplace requirements.
Sync Fees and Dub Fees
A Production music company charges a fee for the licensing of their music. This is often referred to a 'Synchronization Fee' or 'Dub Fee'. This is one of the main income streams for music libraries.
Performing Rights Organisations
Performing Rights Organisations (PRO's) protect, administer and collect performance royalties on behalf of its member composers, artists and publishers.
Performance royalties are generated when music is broadcast on TV or Radio or played in public places like restaurants and other business spaces.
Music that is publicly performed or broadcast has to be licensed. For example a broadcaster such as the BBC or SKY has to pay to broadcast music as do restaurants, shops and users of music on hold systems and others.
These licenses are issued by PRO's to music users whenever music is broadcast to the public. The revenues from these licenses is then collected and split up between all of the members of that particular PRO.
Most countries have their own PRO such as PRS (UK), ASCAP (USA), GEMA (Germany). Many countries have more than one.

Learning to Read Music

People enjoy music in their community, some as audience members and some as participants as well. Learning to read music for the first time or as a refresher will open horizons that transcend other forms of communication. Written music is a language of the world. Whatever one's life has been, acquiring or refreshing basic music reading skills will enhance the enjoyment and success in this artistic endeavor. Some people have no formal musical background, or haven't picked up their instruments or sung since grade school. Now is a great time to learn or relearn the basics. Anything that you learn or refresh from years ago is a gain. Gracefully accept age related limitations while learning to innovate, and you'll be enlarging your musical world.
Reading music starts with being able to see what is in front of you. Make sure that you have plenty of light, that you can easily see what is written on the instructional music page in front of you and that you are comfortable physically. If you can't see the music, try a larger print version of a beginning music instruction book. Reading glasses might also help. The piano or keyboard is a good instrument on which to base your initial music reading skill application. Pianos are widely available in community settings. Because the keyboard is a percussion instrument, a beginner can practice music reading skills and immediately hear the translation of what they are seeing on paper. Even if you plan to sing rather than play an instrument, being able to find your first note and hear it on the piano is hugely gratifying.
The first thing to learn about the keyboard is the location of middle C. A regular sized piano has 88 keys, 52 white keys and 36 black keys. Count only the white keys from the left or lower tones. The 24th one is middle C. It may be helpful to mark it with placement of a penny or sticky note with the letter C written on it. Another way to locate this note is to find the middle area of keys. Middle C is the white key just left of the group of two black keys. Confirm the placement of middle C by both methods.
Now look at middle C written on music paper. For now we will only consider notes starting at middle C and going to the right or higher in tone. Middle C is denoted below the five lines landing on what would be the next horizontal line which horizontally bisects the written note.
Now gently strike the note you marked previously as middle C. Learn the notation shown above and practice finding it on the piano. Listen to the tone. Practice finding middle C without the penny or written clue. Repeat looking at the Middle C on the music paper and finding it on the piano keyboard. Practice this 7 to 10 times over a week. Congratulations on reading your first musical note.

I never travel anywhere without my library.
One of the down sides of RV living is the lack of the space necessary to house your book collection. Whether your tastes run to Romance, Mystery, SiFi, or Science and History, there are always books you can't let go of. All this can be solved with an electronic book such as an Amazon Kindle or a Sony.
Both devices allow you to buy books online or get free books from places like Project Gutenberg. The Amazon allows you to purchases books at the Amazon book store and have them sent wirelessly to your kindle. Imagine - you browse the Amazon book store, read reviews of books written by other readers and get recommendations based on your previous purchases. Then you download a free sample of the book, check it out and purchase it if you like it. All this while you sit in the passenger seat cruising down the highway.
Most of the best sellers are available for the Kindle usually selling for about $10.00. Some books cost less some cost more but most are a considerable saving over the hard cover or paperback price. Amazon online allows you to sort books by price, some Amazon titles are ever FREE! If you purchase from your computer, your title will be automatically downloaded to your Kindle the next time you turn it on with the whispernet feature turned on. Whispernet can be active or inactive to save power. If you're just reading the battery charge will last up to two weeks. Only four hours will give you a full battery charge.
The Kindle includes the battery charger unlike the Sony which charges extra for the charger. Another advantage of the Kindle is that when the battery has finally "had it" it is consumer replaceable where as with the Sony you must send it to a service center for battery replacement.
Both Kindle and Sony allow you to adjust the size of the text. Although they have different proprietary formats, both readers will support text and PDF files. Yes! You can download all your PDF books from your computer. But the neatest thing about the Kindle is that it has a web browser which allows you to surf the internet.
The bottom line is the Sony is sexier looking but the Kindle allows you to do more.

How to Install MP3 Songs in Your LG VX9800 Cell Phone

If you have one of the cool LG VX9800 cell phones and wonder how you get MP3 songs into the phone, here is a short tutorial on how to do that. Easy to follow and easy to do. You'll be jamming to new tunes on your cell phone in no time.
The first mistake many users make in trying to get MP3's on their LG VX9800 is that they simply insert the card into the phone. This won't work and the cell phone will tell you that it can not find any MP3's.
What you need to do is format the card for your cell phone. You do this by inserting the SD card into the VX9800 first. Then remove the SD card and insert it into your computer. Your computer should tell you that new hardware was found.
Depending on what type of computer and software you have, you may see a directory listing with names such as: MY FLIX, My Sounds, My PIX, My MP3. Select "My MP3" and then move the songs you want into this folder. Eject and reinsert the SD card into your VX9800.
One thing you should keep in mind is that you need to keep the Name of the MP3 song to 43 characters or less or the phone will not show the MP3.
I also hear a lot of people complaining that the cell phone does not recognize their MP3 songs when in fact, they have the songs in the wrong format. Sounds funny I know, but the songs have to be in a MP3 format, not a DRM.
If you have problems with the MP3's showing up in the VX9800, then you may have to get a WMA to MP3 converter. There are several places on the Internet where you can find these.
For Mac users, you may have to convert the .aac songs to MP3 in order to get them to work. You can do this easily in iTunes. Here's how.
In your library, highlight the song or songs you want to convert. Go to iTunes preferences, advanced, importing. Make sure that the Import using pull down menu shows MP3 Encoder. Close preferences and in iTunes click on the Advanced pull down menu. With the song or songs you want to convert still highlighted, choose convert to mp3. After it's finished you will have two copies of each song you converted. The original aac and the new mp3. You can delete the aac or keep both. The mp3s can be moved into the MY MP3s folder on your MiniSD (make sure you don't put them in the MY MP3 Playlist folder) card then the card can be put into your LG VX9800 cell phone.
Now you're ready to jam out to the latest songs on your VX9800!

The high profile ebook reading device from Amazon called the Kindle has caught the attention of readers. But then the gadget's cost, ranging from $350 to $400, gives people pause. This product review will introduce you to the features of the Kindle and my opinions about its strengths and weaknesses.
What the Kindle can do

The Kindle is an ebook reading device about the size of a paperback book. With a screen using e-ink display technology, it allows you to comfortably read digital text in both sunlight and artificial light. The screen refresh rate when you advance an ebook page is faster than turning a paper page. Depending on whether you use the Kindle's internal memory or add memory cards, you can store dozens to hundreds of ebooks and audio books.

If you like audio books, then the Kindle is a great device because it has an internal speaker for direct listening to audio books. Or, it can be plugged into headphones or external speakers, like in your car. Because the mp3 files for audio books are larger than ebooks, you'll need memory cards if you plan to load the device with more than a couple audio titles.

In addition to ebooks and audio books, the Kindle can access numerous newspaper and magazine publications and blogs.

A leading capability of the Kindle is wireless shopping. Right now, it has immediate wireless access to the Amazon store in the United States. Purchases can be made and content loaded onto the Kindle without using a computer.

The strengths of the Kindle

Overall, the physical characteristics of the Kindle are ergonomically comfortable. The page turning buttons operate smoothly and can be easily used by all sizes of hands. The power usage of the device is conservative, and depending on your reading habits, you can easily expect to go one or two weeks without needing to charge it.

The large content selection through Amazon for its device is also a strength. With thousands of ebooks, audio books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs wirelessly available to users, you will not lack for easily accessible media.

Also note that the wireless service has no ongoing cell phone charges. Your costs of operating the Kindle will be determined by how much content you buy for it.

The weaknesses of the Kindle

Being a first generation device, the Kindle is not perfect. In my opinion the user interface was hard to understand and the menus were cumbersome to use. For example, when browsing through the table of contents of an ebook, I found it somewhat hard to line up the menu cursor with the headings.

I have noted that the mechanical parts are comfortable to use, but I did not always agree with their placement. The right side only has a control to advance the page while the left side has controls to advance the page or return to the previous page. Therefore, to turn a page back you are forced to use your left hand. I think that page forward and back controls should be on both sides of the device. Adding to my confusion was a control labeled "Back" on the right side, which I would hit in error trying to go back a page. This control actually took me back to a different menu.

Another general complaint made by many users about the Kindle is the proprietary format of the ebooks from Amazon. The device is meant to steer you to make purchases from only Amazon. This is understandable from the company's point of view, but it does mean that ebooks bought through Amazon can only be viewed on their device. If you decide in the future to buy an ebook reading device from another company, then you would not have access on that new non-Kindle device to any ebooks you purchased from Amazon.

Although designed to be an Amazon device, the Kindle can actually be used to read ebooks from other sources. A USB cable will connect the device to your computer where you could load ebooks in the widely available Mobipocket format (unencrypted files only) or plain text files.

Conclusion

The Kindle presents you with a quality device for reading ebooks along with other media. Although not perfect, especially with a user interface that often left me befuddled, it still performs its purpose well. A final consideration is the seller of the device. Amazon is a large company with a huge content selection, and, very importantly, an excellent reputation for customer service.

This fourth effort from the soft-rock-masquerading-as-country band Rascal Flatts moved more than 721,000 copies its first week out, which let the female-friendly trio rub elbows with some mighty heady company. Only four other country artists (Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, the Dixie Chicks, and Tim McGraw) have rolled out numbers like that, and only 24 other acts total (including Eminem, 50 Cent, U2, and Coldplay). So what's the hook, besides Gary LeVox's wounded tenor and Joe Don Rooney's boy-band face? Clearly, it's the songs. Or it usually is. On Me and My Gang, "What Hurts the Most" is the one that'll end up on a tape loop in your head, though "Yes, I Do" memorably frames romantic yearning and regret with ersatz reggae rhythms, and the sexy "Cool Thing" does a slow burn. The problem? New producer Dann ("King of Excess") Huff bloats too many tunes with screaming, by-the-book guitars and general bombast. And despite his über success with Faith Hill and Keith Urban, Huff has never really understood what makes country, well... country. Instead, he insultingly works in a snippet of steel guitar and a couple of family lyrics--e.g., the melodramatic "Ellsworth" is meant to pull the heartstrings of anyone who's seen the cruelty of Alzheimer's--and thinks he's thrown Nashville a bone. Worse, "Backwards" boringly reworks that hoary ol' country joke "What do you get when you play a country song backwards?," the title song is a Big & Rich ripoff, and even God gets dragged in for a half-baked attempt at middle-America resonance ("He Ain't the Leavin' Kind"). C'mon now. Call these boys pop and be done with the pandering. Joe Don's famously photographed derrière got a fairer crack than this. --Alanna Nash

Cranking the Volume on Your iPod Or MP3 Player Can Damage Hearing

Kids have always loved listening to their favorite music, and the louder the better - much to their parents' dismay. In the 1980s, the portable tape recorder with headphones - which came to be known as the "Walkman" - enabled teenagers to listen to their music as loud as they wanted, anywhere they wanted, without disturbing anyone around them.
But the more modern rendition of the Walkman - portable MP3 Players and iPods - pose a major threat to our children's hearing health, and to ours.
The problem is a combination of the technology of portable digital devices that creates a non-buffered crystal clear sound, and the type of headphones typically used with them, which do not have a buffer either. In December 2005, Dean Garstecki, an audiologist and professor at Northwestern University reported that more and more young people were being diagnosed with the types of hearing loss typically found in older adults. He attributed this trend to the "earbud" type headphones that usually accompany iPod and MP3 Players. With the earbud headphones, the sound frequencies are not buffered as they are with the more traditional, ear cup-style headsets.
Newsweek Magazine recently reported that researchers at the House Ear Institute found that listeners can unfortunately increase the volume of today's portable digital devices without the "signal distortion that occurs with traditional analog audio." The older-model headphones that were popular just 15 to 20 years ago - that have ear cups outside of the ears - had that distortion when the volume was turned up, which functioned as a much-needed buffer to protect our hearing. Today's technology does not provide that buffer - the earpiece is placed in the ear, not outside of it, and the digital devices do not create that distortion, no matter how high the volume.
In addition, people often listen to these devices while they are on the go, and have a tendency to crank the volume in an attempt to drown outside noise, further posing a risk to our hearing. Using the earbud style headphones during activities such as exercise, for example, puts the user at a greater risk. During exercise, blood, which can act as a buffer, is diverted from the ears to other parts of the body - so our already vulnerable hearing is in even more jeopardy.
Headwize reports that a study conducted on music listeners using headphones revealed that while indoors with no background noise, the participants were comfortable with their music at 69 decibels. Outdoors, where the background noise was recorded at 65 decibels, participants using their headphones turned the volume up to 82 decibels and as high as 95 decibels to drown out the surrounding noise. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines limit exposure to noise at this level to no more than four hours each day. The study concluded that the participants were at risk for hearing damage and recommended "avoiding continuous use of [portable stereos] in noisy conditions."
Northwestern University's Dean Garstecki offers more specific guidelines: His 60 percent/60 minute rule - listen to MP3 Players and iPods for "about an hour a day and at levels below 60 percent of maximum volume." The problem is, most of the population using headphones - young music fans - listen to their music for much longer than one hour per day. But, you can help minimize hearing loss, damage and problems while listening to your favorite music as long as you want to - the secret is in the headphones.

But there's no need to turn off your music - just be smarter about how you listen to it. If you are using your MP3 Player or iPod when you're exercising, in a noisy environment or you just want to hear the fine details of your music, ditch the earbud headphones and reach for a set of noise reduction ones instead. And you'll be enjoying your favorite music for a long time to come.

Audio Books and MP3 Players - A Perfect Couple?

Most of the Mp3 players' manufacturers plan their product for the purpose of listening to music. However, in the past couple of years more and more MP3 players are used for listening to audio books. There is a difference between the needs using the MP3 players for audio books and for MP3 music. If you consider using your new MP3 player for listening to audio books take into account the following considerations:
1. Behavior after interruption - This is the most important consideration you should take into account. When listening to audio books not as listening to music, you want to continue listening from the point you have stopped and not from the beginning. Most MP3 player do not have the option to continue from the exact point in the audio book but from the beginning of the same file. However, some MP3 players do not have a continuation option and start from the beginning of the audio book after an interruption.
When you shop a new MP3 player check it - play an audio book, take off the batteries, then put the batteries back and check if the MP3 player start from the beginning of the same file or from the beginning of the audio book.
2. Memory - The required memory depends on the MP3 format of the audio book, the length of the audio book and the number of audio books you wish to upload to your MP3 player.
MP3 players usually come with a flash memory. You can add a memory card to most of the players. The minimum memory required is 128Mb (less will be enough for a short audio book of about 6 hours). Try getting the biggest memory possible of a combination of flash memory and memory card.
3. Volume - The loudness is one the main problems in relation with audio books. Some MP3 players have an annoying limitation of the high volume. Hence, It is almost impossible to listen to the audio book in a noisy surrounding as an airplane, train or a gym room. Our advice is to put the head phones in the shop and make sure there is a loud volume that will be sufficient for listening to audio books.
Yet, Most MP3 players make the experience of listening to an audio book far better than listening to audio books on CD and books on tape. Try it, you can even download free audio books and get a free MP3 player.

How to Arrange Music for Piano

So, how does one go about arranging piano music? That's a good question. And one that can get confusing for most students. They sometimes confuse composing with arranging and with good reason - they're closely connected. Let's look at how to arrange a piece of music for piano. Specifically, we'll look at the lesson piece "Fall Sunrise."
Fall Sunrise is a contemporary/new age piano piece I wrote to illustrate how ABA form works. The first section is comprised of 4-bars which is repeated twice. The next section (B) is an 8-bar phrase repeated twice and then we come back to our (A) section, which again is repeated twice. So, if we were to "arrange" this so we can see what it would look like we'd end up with something like this:

This is a shorthand way of seeing the arrangement. It simply tells us how many times to repeat a section. Now, this arrangement by itself is sufficient for about 3-4 minutes of music, however, if we wanted to, we could add another section and lengthen it even more. The reason why we need another section (if we wanted more music) is that if we keep repeating this, it gets monotonous and boring.
We introduce a new section for contrast purposes. The ear hears this new music and is refreshed. But before we introduce a new section, we need something to lead us into it. We need what is called a transitionary phrase. Two bars is usually enough to accomplish this. The transition prepares the listener to receive something new. It's a connective device that bridges the sections. After the transition is introduced, we can bring in a new section of music and call it C.
Now, if we were to write out what this might look like we can come up with something like this:

Where T= transition and C= a new section of music. By adding in a new section, we can now repeat the other sections more because we've introduced contrast into the mix.

The underlying principles all Renaissance art was its artistic honesty to nature, as opposed to tradition, which had been the style of pre Renaissance art.
This principle was deduced from the study of the new found learning, being spread throughout Italy by Greek refugees, and the consequent awakened interest with which people regarded the remains of ancient architecture, sculpture and other art forms, constantly being unearthed in their own country.
With the adoption of the classical principle of truth to nature, naturally came the adoption of a second, that of the study of the antique as the true path to excellence in art or letters. We cannot fail to recognise these twin principles at work in the writings of the masters of the musical Renaissance.
A parallel to that truth to nature, which the painters and sculptors of the Renaissance proper acquired from the study of Greek art, may be traced in the efforts of the composers of the Renaissance, to make their music more and more flexible and responsive to the varied play of human sentiment.
Musicians as well as sculptors and painters studied antique art. Although for musicians not as profitable, the lessons to be learned from antiquity by musicians were not for educational purposes but more for inspiration and creativity.
Palestrina has already been mentioned as typifying the culmination of the musical development of the early ages, and now, in taking up the consideration of a new period, we have, in the first place, to concern ourselves with a man who was already forty eight years old when Palestrina was born. The Flemish composer Adrian Willaert, chapel master of St. Mark's at Venice.
Willaert may be considered as belonging at the same time to the old order and the new, for while, in common with his fellow citizen, Orlando di Lasso, some may say he was one of the last and greatest of the Flemish masters. At the same time, he must be reckoned as a forerunner of the musical reformers of the Renaissance.
Willaert, although he did not originate any new forms in music, may lay claim to have been one of the first to give musical expression to that love of colour, movement, and general spirit of adaptiveness, which are such outstanding characteristics of the Renaissance period.
The forms he employed were those used by his contemporaries and immediate predecessors. The Mass, Psalm, Motet, and Madrigal. However, in them all his colour sense was very strong, comparatively speaking, that is, for that tonal splendour, which led the Venetians in their enthusiasm to term the works of their cherished "Messer Adriano" aurum fotabik or "drinkable gold" might not be so readily apparent to a modern audience.
Although to a musician, instituting a comparison between the works of Willaert and those of earlier writers, the effects gained through the use of broadly contrasting harmonies by the Flemish master cannot fail to appear strikingly original.
While dealing with Venetian music mention must be made of Andrea and Giovanni Gabrielli, uncle and nephew, who represent a later development of the style of Willaert. Giovanni Gabrielli (1557-1612) carried his experiments in tone colour into the region of pure instrumental music; and his "Symphonic Sacrse," the first volume of which was published at Venice in 1597, entitles him to rank as one of the earliest of writers for the orchestra.
In the first volume of this work, there are sixteen pieces for from eight to sixteen instruments, and in the second volume, there are canzonets for as many as twenty-two instruments. These compositions are written for violins, cornets (not the cornets of modern times, but wooden instruments), and trombones.
After the time of Willaert and the Venetians, were the actual workers in the Renaissance of music, and the first of their achievements, the invention of the Music Drama or Opera.

Pop music is usually comprised of happy, upbeat rhythms with simple melodies and lyrics that relate to love, relationships, sex and dancing. It is not a genre that is meant to bring deep and serious world issues to the fore, nor is it meant to invoke introspection and reflection. It's there simply to bop around to, and join in the rousing chorus at the top of your lungs. Its feel good music, designed for fun and lighthearted entertainment.
Unlike other music genres such as rock and hip hop, where the songs are often written by the artists themselves, pop songs are usually written by professional songwriters. In order to generate as much exposure as possible, artists create music videos and stage extravagant live performances to attract media interest. Music videos are particularly important as they can enjoy international commercial success and thus reach an extremely wide audience. This has made pop, arguably the world's biggest music genre.
"Popular music" has been around since the 50s, with people such as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley falling into the category. Pop music, as most of us know it, really came into its own in the 80s with the rise of artists such as Michael Jackson and Madonna.
Michael Jackson had nine no.1 singles in the US alone during the 80s, and sold over 136 million albums even though he only released two, Thriller and Bad. This ensured that he became the most successful artist of the 80s and earned him the title "King of Pop".
Madonna was another emerging 80s artist who reached iconic status. Widely regarded as the "Queen of Pop", Madonna has experimented by blending pop with a number of other music genres and has sold over 230 million albums globally. Some artists have proved that it is possible to successfully blend pop music and R&B, artists like Nelly Furtado and Rihanna.

Justin Timberlake, who rose to stardom on the tails of one of the more successful boy bands, N'SYNC. He chose to leave the band and pursue an independent solo career and in 2002 released his debut album titled, Justified. After a break of about four years, in which he recorded with other artists, began a movie career, started a fashion label, William Rast, and established his own record label, Tennman Records, he returned to the studio and released his second album, FutureSex/LoveSounds. He has sold over 15 million albums worldwide.
Nelly Furtado first came to our attention in 2000 when she released her debut album, Whoa, Nelly. "I'm like a bird", her breakthrough single from the album, won her a Grammy award and established her as an artist to watch. In 2003, after taking some time off to have her first child, she released her second album, Folklore, which didn't fare as well commercially as Whoa, Nelly did. However, her latest album, Loose, which she released in 2006, has put her firmly back on the hit parade. It has had several hit singles, most notably, "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "Say It Right" and "Do It". Nelly is not afraid of experimenting with her sound and often incorporates different instruments, sounds, languages and vocal styles into her music. She claims to have attributed her new youthful sound on Loose to the presence of her two-year old daughter.
Kylie Minogue has one of the longest standing and most successful careers in pop music history. She's seen out the 80s, the 90s and has enjoyed huge success in the 2000s. She is primarily famous in Europe and Australia, although her popularity in the US is growing. She is one of the world's most easily recognisable celebrities and earned herself thousands of new fans by the brave manner in which she battled breast cancer and dealt with her resulting hair loss. In January 2007 Madame Tussaud's in London revealed a new waxwork of Kyle, the fourth one. The Queen is the only person in the world to have had more models created.
This November Kylie will release her much anticipated 10th album, her first in four years. For most of her career Kylie has been regarded as a gay icon, which she encourages with good humoured comments such as this one, "I am not a traditional gay icon. When I was younger my uncle was heavily into Van Halen but up until this point I never actually listened to any of their albums all the way through. Now I realize I am reviewing their second album before hearing their first one so the best thing to do is review it on it's own merrits as opposed to a follow up to a debut. I personally don't listen to a lot of hard rock music but along with AC/DC,Aerosmith and some of the later Led Zeppelin albums this album is very appealing. I just read someone describing Van Halen as lacking creativity. They sure didn't. Eddie Van Halen is right up there with Jimi Hendrix,Jimmy Page and Pete Townsand in terms of reinventing the sound of hard rock guitar. Some of his riffs,vamping and even mildly psychedisized lines here are surprisingly clean and fit right in with Van Halens funky sounding grooves and tight harmonies. They open this album with a cover of Linda Rondstat's "You're No Good" which really captures that spirit. The groove is tight and the arrangment and riffs are top notch for this kind of music. The Van Halen brothers really keep the music from becoming just a big noise fest,something that happens to all too much music in the hard rock vein. The hit "Dance The Night Away" really establishes Van Halen's trademark melodic hard rock,based here again more on groove and clever vamping as opposed to any arena posturing yet they got plenty of action on that front anyway. That song has a heavy Rolling Stonesy quality which really brings out the funky blues bottom to the song itself. "Bottoms Up","Outta Love Again","Lights In The Sky" and "D.O.A" are all more sturdy,traditionally fast rock tunes that when performed ontage probably gave "Diamond Dave" an opportunity to be at his athletic rock showman best. The tunes are more theatrical than edgey and that helped the band develope their persona even more. One of the most interesting songs is "Spanish Fly",an under a minute instrumental featuring an almost latin-fusion style tune played acoustically by Eddie Van Halen and really lets him excersise his muscles as a musician of that era. The final tune "Beautiful Girls" is one of the great funk/hard rock hybirds next to "Walk This Way" or "Back In Black". The groove is tight,the riffs walk right along the beat and Dave's decadenet vocal line is just icing on the cake. Even for a second album this really continued the flair and swagger of Van Halen in it's prime and at the very least showed that sophmore slump wasn't going to be a big issue for them.

This is a 1979 sophmore effort by Van Halen when David Lee Roth was their singer. Overall this is a pretty mellow metal album. It went multi platinum. Technical wizardry by Roth & Eddie Van Halen. Stryper said they were the best band of all time. Key tracks are You're No Good & Dance the Night Away.

As soon as you plug in the USB cable to both your computer and MP3 player, your computer will indicate that it has found a new piece of hardware. If it doesn't indicate this, then something is wrong. Simply unplug it and try again.
Third, open your Windows Media Player and open the audio book you want to copy. This will open the audio book in the main display area of Windows Media Player.
Fourth, add the audio book to the Sync List of your Windows Media Player.
Fifth, now you should click on the Sync tab on the Windows Media Player. This will bring a pull-down arrow on the left-side box of the Sync tab. Make sure you select the option "Removable Disk (E)" as the source where the audio book will be copied to.
Sixth, you will see a display with an option to "start sync". Go ahead and click on this option. When you have done this, the Windows Media Player will indicate to you that it's sending the audio book to your MP3 player as "Removable Disk (E)".
Seventh, as soon as the sync (or copying) is complete, you can verify if it is on your MP3 player.
Lastly, ensure you click on your PC's hardware icon (located in your system tray) to "safely remove hardware". Don't remove the USB cable until you get the clear signal saying "safe to remove the hardware". NOTE - not doing this before removing the USB cable can damage your computer and/or your MP3 player.
When all of this is done, you can then playback the audio book from your MP3 player. If you have followed all of the above steps you should find the audio book playing on your MP3 player.
If however you are using an older version of Windows Media Player, you can still follow the exact steps above. The only major difference is that instead of having "sync", you will have "copy". You can click on it and follow the same steps above to have your audio book copied to your MP3 player.

How Do I Download Music to My Mp3 Player?

Well it all depends on what you want to do. Do you want to take the music from a cd and put it on your Mp3 player, or do want to directly download music tracks from the internet on to your Mp3 player. If you want to get music from a cd onto your Mp3 player, you will first need copy your cd with windows media player or another cd playing software. You will need to change the format into "Mp3" format by "ripping" it. "Ripping" a CD is basically copying music to your computer.
After you have the files properly formatted on your hard drive, you can remove the drive from your mp3 player and plug it into a "usb" port on your computer. You then go to your hard drive, find the files you copied, making sure they are in the proper format,and then move them to the drive of your Mp3 player.
OK lets say you want to download music directly from the internet. You need to see if any special software is required to assist in the downloading process. Normally you wont need any. You just hook up your device to a "usb" port, go to your settings and look for "usb mode" or connect. With some devices you wont need to do anything, because they will automatically be detected as a removable hard drive.
Next you will need to find out where the files will be stored. Depending on which music download vendor you choose, some will allow you to buy one track at a time, if this is the case you can download one track and see where on your device the file was stored, and then proceed to buy further tracks and choose the same location to store them. If not, the files can be stored in different locations and the device will find them once you disconnect from the port.

I'm a huge LTJ fan and was extremely excited about this release even not knowing a single song. Well the ensemble of choices does not disappoint. I honestly don't want to give away anything about the tracks because that was the fun of listening to the ep. I was smiling, laughing, and being impressed more than i have by a cd in a long time. The band is truly talented in playing, performing, arranging, and upgrading music be it originals or covers. Less Than Jake have an extensive catalog of music, all of which is worth checking out. I bought Greased when i was 15 and have continued to buy every single thing they release. True originals. And a nice bunch of guys to boot!

This is a great old classic (though not THAT old!) with three top-notch actresses and one hell of an actor playing the main roles in this film. The minor characters were also played well, and the story is entertaining. It's cool to see how these women are working together, rather than just fighting one another for the man's attentions, and learning powerful magic and spells along the way. I do feel that the ending was a bit cliched and it would be nice to have ended without all these babies cluttering things up, but otherwise this really is a wonderful film.

This is in my top five favorite movies.......a wonderful erotic romp with elements of social commentary......satirical and critical of religious zeal, conventional marriage, and small town gossip. The acting is amazing and it is Jack Nicholson at his very devilish best. I am not sure what John Updike thinks about this Hollywood rensition of his novel, but it certainly entertains.

Back in November 1988, I purchased "The Traveling Wilburys Volume 1 cassette. I didn't know what to expect. Man I was really surprised. A Supergroup that's worth the hype. And it all started as a happy accident when George Harrison wanted to record "Handle Me With Care" with old and new friends. The song was going to be used as a B-Side single but whoever idea it was(probably former ELO member & producer Jeff Lynne)to make a whole record out of it. Lynn may have brought almost everyone together too since he produced Harrison, finished Orbison's soon to be released "Mystery Girl"(which would be his last) and was putting the finishing touches on Petty's first solo album "Full Moon Fever". Harrison may had brought Dylan in since they knew each other for years plus Petty tour with him two years before. I remember listening to the tape while I was studied for final exams during my sophomore year in college. When the tape was over, I played it again & said to myself, "Well, here's a tape that's full of great songs here, no fillers at all". And again give Jeff Lynne credit for balancing each artists talent here. Sadly after a month this CD was released, Roy Orbison past away while the CD received critical acclaim & climbing the charts, reaching No.2 on the charts. A decade later, Harrison past away. After 22 years later, this CD still sound fresh & fun to listened too. I'm glad Rhino/Warner re-released this CD so a new generation can buy & enjoy this classic(I don't understand why Capitol Records turned down re-releasing this gem while buying back the Harrison's master tapes from Warner Brothers Records). The Wilburys is still worth the hype.

When this album came out it was a remarkable collection of Singer/Songwriter guitarists. This Album contributed to the resurgence of Roy Orbison and new work from him. It also gave Dylan a place to showcase his poetry. All in all some selections are a little cheesy but the historic value more than makes up for it. This is a must have for any Adult Contemporary collection. Also real Songwriters can use it as a great example of collaboration between 5 giants in the industry.

The first time I heard "The Remedy" I was driving a remote stretch of highway in the pouring rain. It was a black night.

But within the first few bars and two lines of lyrics, it literally stopped me in my tracks. I pulled over, hit the flashers, and cranked the volume.

I wished there was cell phone service to call the station and find out who this fresh voice belonged to! It took awhile before I found him, but fame has a way of rewarding great talent. The next time I heard another song, I became hooked on his voice.

Yes, there is a wee bit of similarity re John Mayer, but it's a long stretch. Each has their unique gifts.

I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Virginia exile Jason Mraz grew up listening to Dave Matthews and Agents of Good Roots, local heroes whose frat-friendly influences are much in evidence on his major-label debut. Producer John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer) augments Mraz's SoCal cohorts with Agents' rhythm section, dramatically expanding and polishing songs like "Curbside Prophet" and "You and I Both," which previously appeared in looser, less developed versions on Mraz's self-released live recordings. But fans from the singer-songwriter's coffeehouse years need not despair. Mraz's witty lyrics and easygoing folk-blues stylings (think Jack Johnson on Prozac) are still very much in evidence. He's also in fine voice and, on two standout tracks--"Who Needs Shelter" and "Absolutely Zero"--rivals Neil Finn in his ability to invoke the spirit of Paul McCartney. Interesting album. 3.8 stars. - Adrian the Complex Lonely - USA
Some of it sounds the same after a while though. But all in all, Jason Mraz has constructed an album that is decently interesting to listen to. If you still haven't had the chance to hear this one, then I will tell you it's really laid-back and somewhat eclectic. There is folk and pop. A light reggae pop song ('I'll Do Anything'). Maybe some light rock thrown in for good measure (see 'Too Much Food'). Nothing too heavy or threatening. In return, what can be said is that it's relaxing at times, even lulling. :D

Mraz's strengths are his lyrics and the speed that he can sometimes spit them at. 'Curbside Prophet' is the song that shows this the best. Not my favorite song, but does he GO on this one! The song is just about Jason thinking he's got so much in him, but he's waiting for his chance to really shine.

But after a while, the album does get a little boring. For some, on repeated listens, they may find themselves skipping through just a bit, especially towards the middle/end of the disc.

Not having much more to say about the CD itself, I will get on to the rating and my favorite tracks.

This is not a CD--- - nobody - where ever
I wish I could give a review of this disc. However as my computer will not recognise it I have not been able to play it. And I can not put it on my IPOD. I can only assume the copy protection is keeping me from enjoying my purchase. I therefore give this CD (??) a thumbs down. Now I've got to contact Amazon, get a return authorization and pay the shipping from Iraq just to get a refund. Interestingly enough, nowhere on the disc or package is there the CD logo as is required if the product is a genuine CD or DVD. Since Amazon has listed it as a CD then they have misrepresented the product. And before anyone tells me that my computer cd rom drive is at fault, the 4 other cd's that came in that order played and imported fine into I Tunes along with the other 800 some odd cd's also imported into Itunes.

As with every other type of business, if you want to market to the right type of people then your image is everything. You need to be able to create a web presence that shows potential clients exactly what you and your music is about. The best way to go about doing this is creating your own website.
Creating a website allows you to link potential customers to your website whenever you post on forums, or whenever you create a web presence elsewhere such as on MySpace, etc. It is basically a space where potential customers get to see what you are all about and as first impressions are everything, you need to be able to leave a good image of both you and your music on your website.
So how exactly do you do this? Well, think about what type of music you are making. Is it Indie/Rock/Pop/Country music? The type of music you are making will reflect entirely on the image you want to give out. So if you are creating Country music, you will want to have a country theme to your website, not something with a modern and retro type style. Think about it, if you were visiting a musician's website that created Rap music, you wouldn't expect to see a Country theme on it would you? So create a website that reflects your theme and that is the first step to marketing both you and your website.
Using Blogs, Podcasts and MySpace
If you really want to draw in a lot of potential customers, then blogs, podcasts and websites such as MySpace and YouTube are certainly the way to go.
Blogs are great because you get to add a voice to your music. Allowing you to link back to your website, people will get an idea of the type of music you make, who you are and what is new with your music. People love getting to know musicians before trying out their songs and so if you do create a blog, it will draw in a lot of new customers for you. Another advantage to a blog is that if you use the right keywords, you can get it recognized by search engines and therefore more people will discover your music. It is by far one of the best methods of online marketing.
Podcasts are also very popular and you can create your own quickly and easily by visiting MySpace and selecting "MySpace Music". Literally millions of people use MySpace and they are constantly looking at new music on there. So if you want to get recognized fairly quickly, creating a profile and releasing your music on there is definitely a good idea.
Using websites such as the ones mentioned above, you can easily market your music online. YouTube is another website that allows you to record yourself or whatever you like and millions of people will view your video. So get recording, place your songs online, set up a website and start blogging and you should end up with potentially thousands of new customers!

I bought this CD today and I have to say it is pretty bad. It doesn't sound any thing like their other CDs. There is no unity with the songs and feel disjointed. CD1 is terrible I don't really like any songs on there. On the second CD I like Trust me and Just Foe Me that's it. I bought this based off of their previous work without listening to it. I had hoped that they would not follow the path of other artists and lose their way. I hate that I used a gift card on it, being that I could have put that towards a CD I actually like. There's is no anointing whatsoever. I would highly recommend people not buy this CD. Let me say this as SGM fan I hope they get back to their roots.

I was wondering if it was just me and my husband. I guess not. This release felt more commercial and some of the theology was a bit different as well. Not sure what has happened. I am only able to play one song and that is the reprise of refreshed by fire. It is a song of repentance and deliverance.

A waste of a piece of my life - Richie Rich -
Know this 1st. I love Shekinah Glory. I bought there 1st cd twice as 1 went missing. I bought all the others as they were released. The 3rd installation Jesus wasn't so great, I love prophecy as it has its place and their were confirmations for me, though I think it would have been good to have left it out of the cd making room for songs but left on the DVD it was still a blessing anyway. Anyhow the album Jesus made it through for me because God's anointing was on it still.

I admit I was a bit sceptical about Refreshed By Fire mainly because of the last one. The cd: The 1st two tracks the intro and Reclaim your mountain was okay. After it though it became ridiculous quickly with off-key unanointed singing and amateur sounding not for CD songs. The song Living life is a slow build up and for the most part off-key but when SGM actually joins in it sounds okay. The worry sets in quickly though about this production that its not an SGM production as a body but a Phil Tarver album. This is just CD 1. After living life it becomes a "should be dvd only" recording with what you will inevitably be hearing for the next how much years that you put on the CD. Irritating!!!

Note: the 1st two albums particularly were successful Because they focused chiefly on the Outer court,Inner court,Holy of Holies.

CD 2: The 1st track the minstrel released is something that really should have got done in their own personal worship practice prayer time, certainly not live, so should the 2nd track as it just became bugging entertainment on CD not anointing. Its frustrating to listen to because its not SGM as you know it. I tried to make excuses for this obvious waste of printed CD's but its straight whack.

p.s. Phil Tarver needs to stand back and let the team sing together like on there 1st album. He's got his own album. The singers used are average at best but that wouldn't have even stood out if the anointing was consistently on this.

Again SGM's original pattern was Outer court,Inner court,Holy of Holies. This is not the case here at all.

The Rivers of God the track is a refreshing Inner Court NOT Holy of Holies song of which you do begin to open up, but then all of a sudden it just fades out like your listening to something thats pre-recorded, infact all the CD does is keep fading out instead of captivating the atmosphere like all the other albums they did.

The High place - BORING. Ascending Higher - REALLY BORING and the Reprise IS JUST NOT GOOD!. I'd be fighting sleep if the frustration from this project didn't keep me awake.

The track Trust Me is actually ok, not dripping with the anointing but nice. The problem is by the time you get to this song after listening to the previous tracks appreciating it doesn't come easily.

Finally the track "Just for me"; It starts out really nice as it invokes you to lift your hands for about 3mins 45secs and then... Pure screaming and off-key shouting takes place, even then it could actually quite safely end and be kind of respected by 7 mins or so. But no they needed to seal it with 14mins plus more of total nonsense.

what I do hope is that SGM will read the reviews cause this CD is a waste of money. I still love SGM alot. I just believe like many others who have gained notoriety, it's gone to there heads, defo our man Phil. They need to just go back to the Pattern that works and don't rush. Vet the singers voices and lives 1st, see if pride has crept in unawares. Be humble and go back to the pattern of the Outer court,Inner court,Holy of Holies. Also in embracing the worship let us the listeners embrace it too by not fading out every track like your in a recording studio.

In closing; On the 1st two albums there was no need to look super spiritual with a whole bunch of prophecies seeing that your holyghost filled prophetic songs like We worship you today, father me, I embrace you, The secret place, like never before and so much more took us in to receive something fresh from God each time we listened ourselves.
