The Best of Talking Heads Overview

Formed in NYC in the mid-'70s by David Byrne, Chris Franz, Tina Weymouth, and ex-Modern Lover Jerry Harrison, the Talking Heads evolved out of their now-legendary humble beginnings at CBGB's to become one of the most adventurous and influential bands ever. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the Heads' visionary, polyrhythmic sound daringly combined funk and punk, African beats, avant-garde minimalism, and pure pop. From their 1977 debut through their Brian Eno-produced classics to their '88 farewell, Naked, they both pushed artistic boundaries and delivered indelible radio hits like "Once In A Lifetime" and "Burning Down The House."

Live in the Lbc & Diamonds in the Rough (W/Dvd) Overview

While headlining the Rockstar Taste Of Chaos tour earlier this year, Avenged Sevenfold (aka A7X) taped its full, incendiary April 10 homecoming gig at the Long Beach Arena. Now Avenged Sevenfold issues a DVD of that concert plus a CD featuring previously unreleased songs and covers (including Iron Maiden and Pantera) recorded during the sessions for last year's #4 charting, near-gold self titled album. Vengeance is sweet with this metallic CD+DVD package.

Review Cote D'Azur

Cote D'Azur Best Review

Cote D'Azur Overview

Fans that have followed Russ Freeman and The Rippingtons for any stretch of time over the past quarter century know the versatile award winning and Grammy® nominated guitarist/composer and producer has long had a penchant for naming songs and albums after exotic places ("Aruba," "Kenya," "Morocco," Weekend in Monaco, Sahara, et al). But The Ripps' latest Peak Records recording Cote D'Azur--inspired by Freeman's passion for the French people and the storied region of the French Riviera--is more than simply the latest stamp on Freeman's well traveled passport. Beyond simple wanderlust or a gathering of "musical postcards" from the Southern region of France, it taps into a spirit that's deeper and more transcendent than any other group project to date.

Learning to Read Music

People enjoy music in their community, some as audience members and some as participants as well. Learning to read music for the first time or as a refresher will open horizons that transcend other forms of communication. Written music is a language of the world. Whatever one's life has been, acquiring or refreshing basic music reading skills will enhance the enjoyment and success in this artistic endeavor. Some people have no formal musical background, or haven't picked up their instruments or sung since grade school. Now is a great time to learn or relearn the basics. Anything that you learn or refresh from years ago is a gain. Gracefully accept age related limitations while learning to innovate, and you'll be enlarging your musical world.

Reading music starts with being able to see what is in front of you. Make sure that you have plenty of light, that you can easily see what is written on the instructional music page in front of you and that you are comfortable physically. If you can't see the music, try a larger print version of a beginning music instruction book. Reading glasses might also help. The piano or keyboard is a good instrument on which to base your initial music reading skill application. Pianos are widely available in community settings. Because the keyboard is a percussion instrument, a beginner can practice music reading skills and immediately hear the translation of what they are seeing on paper. Even if you plan to sing rather than play an instrument, being able to find your first note and hear it on the piano is hugely gratifying.

The first thing to learn about the keyboard is the location of middle C. A regular sized piano has 88 keys, 52 white keys and 36 black keys. Count only the white keys from the left or lower tones. The 24th one is middle C. It may be helpful to mark it with placement of a penny or sticky note with the letter C written on it. Another way to locate this note is to find the middle area of keys. Middle C is the white key just left of the group of two black keys. Confirm the placement of middle C by both methods.

Now look at middle C written on music paper. For now we will only consider notes starting at middle C and going to the right or higher in tone. Middle C is denoted below the five lines landing on what would be the next horizontal line which horizontally bisects the written note.

Now gently strike the note you marked previously as middle C. Learn the notation shown above and practice finding it on the piano. Listen to the tone. Practice finding middle C without the penny or written clue. Repeat looking at the Middle C on the music paper and finding it on the piano keyboard. Practice this 7 to 10 times over a week. Congratulations on reading your first musical note.

Lennon NYC Feature

  • LENNON NYC

Lennon NYC Overview

LENNONYC is the story of one of the most famous and influential artists of the Twentieth Century, and how he found redemption not in the public adoration he craved as a youth, but in the quiet and simple pleasures of fatherhood. And, though he wasn't a typical immigrant, his story is certainly an immigrant's tale. Lennon came to New York City in 1971, seeking what every other immigrant who has washed up on its shores has sought: freedom-the freedom to be himself and not 'Beatle John,' the freedom to love without the overwhelming public scorn he and Yoko had suffered in London, and, simply, the freedom to live a normal life.
LENNONYC tells this story with never before-released in-studio recordings, concert film only recently transferred to HD, and a trove of Lennon/Ono compositions-some in versions previously unheard. It also contains interviews with those closest to Lennon during this period in his life-friend and photographer, Bob Gruen; musical collaborator and drummer, Jim Keltner; May Pang, Lennon's companion during his 'lost weekend;'rock superstar, Elton John; and Jack Douglas, the producer of Double Fantasy. LENNONYC also contains one of the most powerful and emotionally direct interviews Yoko Ono has ever given. No film about John Lennon has ever covered this story with the same breadth and depth as LENNONYC.
As the public turns its attention to what would have been Lennon's 70th birthday and the 30th anniversary of his murder LENNONYC uniquely commemorates the life of one of the most important and influential artists of the Twentieth Century-someone whose life and work is as powerful and relevant today as it has ever been

Lennon NYC Specifications

John Lennon famously began his life in working-class Liverpool. Just as famously, he lost it in every-class New York. This edition of American Masters explores the nine years he spent in the United States, counting the recording of 1973's Mind Games in Los Angeles during his infamous lost weekend. Director Michael Epstein compiles his words with new interviews, photographs, home movies, and performances (including studio outtakes). In 1971, Lennon and Yoko Ono sought to escape the hostility of the London press and reinvent themselves, so they moved to the Big Apple, where they hobnobbed with Andy Warhol and Abbie Hoffman. Former senator Tom Hayden talks about their efforts on behalf of the antiwar movement and how that caught the attention of the Feds who tried to deport them, while musicians recall the making of albums like 1974's Walls and Bridges. Ono remembers Lennon's househusband days with fondness, even if she still seems hurt when describing the night he slept with another woman (Lennon nemesis Richard Nixon had just won the presidency). In the end, he found the happiness he sought, even if it didn't last. Other speakers include photographer Bob Gruen, talk show host Dick Cavett, Double Fantasy producer Jack Douglas, and Elton John, Lennon's duet partner on the chart-topper "Whatever Gets You Through the Night." LennoNYC, which takes an even-handed look at an enormously talented human being, duplicates events that appear in other films, like Imagine, but there's enough vital material here to please fans old and new alike. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Kindle Review

I never travel anywhere without my library.

One of the down sides of RV living is the lack of the space necessary to house your book collection. Whether your tastes run to Romance, Mystery, SiFi, or Science and History, there are always books you can't let go of. All this can be solved with an electronic book such as an Amazon Kindle or a Sony.

Both devices allow you to buy books online or get free books from places like Project Gutenberg. The Amazon allows you to purchases books at the Amazon book store and have them sent wirelessly to your kindle. Imagine - you browse the Amazon book store, read reviews of books written by other readers and get recommendations based on your previous purchases. Then you download a free sample of the book, check it out and purchase it if you like it. All this while you sit in the passenger seat cruising down the highway.

Most of the best sellers are available for the Kindle usually selling for about $10.00. Some books cost less some cost more but most are a considerable saving over the hard cover or paperback price. Amazon online allows you to sort books by price, some Amazon titles are ever FREE! If you purchase from your computer, your title will be automatically downloaded to your Kindle the next time you turn it on with the whispernet feature turned on. Whispernet can be active or inactive to save power. If you're just reading the battery charge will last up to two weeks. Only four hours will give you a full battery charge.

The Kindle includes the battery charger unlike the Sony which charges extra for the charger. Another advantage of the Kindle is that when the battery has finally "had it" it is consumer replaceable where as with the Sony you must send it to a service center for battery replacement.

Both Kindle and Sony allow you to adjust the size of the text. Although they have different proprietary formats, both readers will support text and PDF files. Yes! You can download all your PDF books from your computer. But the neatest thing about the Kindle is that it has a web browser which allows you to surf the internet.

The bottom line is the Sony is sexier looking but the Kindle allows you to do more.
